As I detangle myself from the empire, I mourn the loss of the parts of me that were so stuck that they had to be cut free.

"I have great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift."

SEPTIMA POINSETTE CLARK

I'm noticing that the tape I use on my art journal pages makes my work hard to photograph without a glare. But this kinda brings the ancestor's words back to life for me.

Zine making is one of the ways I process the world around me. This mixed media creative reuse zine is inspired by the SELC's Plantation to Pollution series. It is made from a cereal box, brown paper bags, straws, bread tabs, and other household trash and will be featured in the 2026 Gullah/Geechee CREATE Showcase.

Gifting holidays often come with enormous pressures to choose the right gifts, the best gifts, and the newest, shiniest gifts. If you're looking for something a little more personal, why not try creative reuse?

"Creative reuse" is a broad term, but we use it to refer to anything that gives new life to an older thing. Clothing you've outgrown, jewelry or glassware that has been broken, unreadable books, and more - all of these things can be re-used, made into something new, beautiful, and significant. You could do this at a Creative Reuse Center or a Repair Cafe, but you can also do it at home!

Here's a piece I made with scrapbooking paper and old books, at Dabble Creative Reuse Center! Since the books were no longer useful in their original form, and the scrapbooking paper was no longer suitable for its original purpose, both could be combined into a cut-paper design with new life.

A cut paper design, photographed with a phone, which casts a shadow over the piece. The paper is in varying shades of green, depicting a coniferous forest with rays of sunlight coming in from the left side. Scraps cut out of multiple books have been glued to the page, arranged to create the following words: "Had spent plenty of time in places he didn't want to be. 'What if you're out sick? Who cares?' 'No one. Just me.' 'Us?' 'Who's us?' They came. The family, stepped forwards, embraced her, and welcomed her, affectionate smile. Society, I own, is necessary to me. 'Somewhere safe to wait.' Meant to provide for me amply. Call you friend, honoured him for such feelings, wished them both joy."

Note to self: Resourceful=full of resources. Resource rich. We don't know we are resource rich until the resources around us disappear. The resources inside me are ever present and renewable. They are enhanced in community and refined by trial.

Traced images using the resources I had available: plastic lid, dryer sheet, paper bag.

"Allison McChord is a registered architect; Austin, a self-described fanboy of old factories. Taking me around the site, they made plain how much they rightly prize the plant as a time capsule of midcentury industrial architecture. The trick will be reconciling the scale of activities they imagine happening there with the concerns neighbors have about traffic and with the vulnerabilities of a flood-prone peninsula."

A dinosaur in the Bois de la Houssière woods ?!
It seems to be a wooden structure covered with old video tapes. It's

The white plastic thingy is from a bread-bag or whatever. (I collect them. As one does.)

The wire is phone-cable being repurposed as speaker-wire (4 wires wrapped together in pairs, but that's not visible here).

The wood is part of an enormous bed-loft that someone left at @KathyH's house before she moved in, and which was used by 3 successive kids over ~3 decades. (It's now in my workroom at #HypertwinManor.)

photo of a bread-bag tie attached to a piece of wood with a small screw

The tie is pointed with its opening upward, and holding a phone-wire cable (the kind of wiring that was ubiquitous when land-line phones were what "telephone" meant, but mainly only after we were allowed to do our own wiring -- 1980s and 90s).
