Firefly Was Canceled Because It Had Standards

I’m rewatching Firefly again, because apparently I like reminders that television once had guts and then collectively lost them. One season. Thirteen episodes. That’s it. Not because it sucked. Not because nobody watched. Because a network of executives with attention spans ruined by focus groups couldn’t recognize gold unless it was stapled to a laugh track. Firefly was messy, smart, sarcastic, and allergic to bullshit. Which explains why it didn’t survive. It trusted the audience. […]

Try this on YOUR protagonist right now.
Reply with:
What they WANT vs. NEED
Their strength/flaw flip
What they'd NEVER do (until forced)

If you can't answer all 3 cleanly, that's your revision roadmap.
Let's workshop some MCs

The "3-Question Character Test" that reveals if your MC is actually interesting.
Steal this framework. I use it for every protagonist, antagonist, and major side character. If they fail even ONE question, they need work. Here's the test:

Give a character two meaningful desires that pull in different directions to create conflict that doesn’t rely on plot twists.

Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier (MCU):
Best friend of Steve Rogers.
Brainwashed by Hydra for 50+ years, committing multiple murders, including Tony Stark’s parents.
Gradually regains memory and “turns” good. While the MCU does show some consequences—Tony refusing to reconcile with him—overall, Bucky’s crimes are largely overlooked in the narrative. He becomes a “redeemed hero,” despite a long history of violence and betrayal. 3)

A major twist: Sienna’s true motives are revealed. Initially Langdon’s ally, her past with Zobrist complicates the story, blurring the lines between hero and villain.

Slow progress, but we officially crossed the 10k word mark in the story I’m writing. I know it’s slow, but we actually are getting there!

We now have a character that will be trouble that might come back. Don’t know. Did my Akira tribute with a riot scene.

We learned a lot about putting Tathagatha into a scene that was more dangerous for reporter than it was for him, and I gotta figure out that aftermath.

Progress!
