#PennedPossibilities 927 — Is your MC proud of who they are? Why or why not?

No. Bolt was stupid and prideful, discounted her family's and coach's admonitions, and ruined her life by being vengeful and running from the constables. She's now working for the mob. Blackmailed. She good at what she does. A criminal regardless of being forced because crimes are still a choice.

She wants out. Her new friends want to help, most not knowing her curse, but she has a long road to travel.

#Writephant 2026.02.09 — A4: Have you written any characters that had bad relationships with food (Richard Bach/Stephen King’s Thinner) or had good/great relationships with food?

It is funny to think I've never written a character with the addictive food issues I have. I tend to avoid issues that smell of body shaming, and always frame body shapes as attractive in the eyes of the POV, often graphically as to why countering our norms and standards, if they notice at all, making such things significant through contradiction or omission. I had a character once who cooked for friends when nervous, like once cooking a feast including what is described as goat birria while waiting for the results of an election that might also end with her being made prime minister. I don't think it was meant to be symbolic, simply tasty displacement activity.

#Writephant 2026.02.09 — A3:

How much effort do you put into describing food in your writing?

If food appears, it's a character in the story. It can be allegory. It can be metaphor. It's also one of the few gratuitous things that can show up in my stories because readers always relate, and enjoy relating.

In a world of vegetarians, day angels eat fish, also. When Bolt follows someone without wings up to a day angel roof top diner most patrons fly up to rather than take 10 flights of stairs, and watches her eat the fishiest of fish, salty greasy garlicky fried kippers and onions, with gusto, she understands the devil-girl is unique in many ways. In another scene, the same woman gets hazed after a newbie training mission with fish-and-chips, and surprises her drill sergeant by gobbling them up. There's also the scene of young lovers getting intimate over a table feeding each other a ramen breakfast…

Do you cook food, order in, or eat out? Or have a meal service of some kind? Do you have opinions–now’s the time to let us hear them.

All three. I love to cook and make rather elaborate main dishes. We are not adverse to having chicken soup and a chicken burrito delivered from Benny's Tacos. Saturday, we ate out at True Foods in Pasadena, which has eclectic foods made with healthy ingredients, for example spaghetti squash lasagna and a prickly pear and hibiscus drink. Tasty and healthy is important.

Do you have a healthy relationship with food, or is it a love/hate thing? CW: Possible triggers.

I have a carbohydrate addition. I don't understand why I can justify lack of self-control and simply say no (to breads, candies, fruit), especially when tired, when normally I eat carefully selected food. Telling myself what I should do, and doing it in the moment, are two different things. The good thing? It gives me experience in writing about addiction in general. Turns out that berating or scoffing at people for lack of self control dismisses all the real psycho-social-physical issues.

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.02.09 — Do you subscribe to ‘show, don’t tell’? Why, or why not?

This is the difference between stating meaning and evoking meaning. Each have their place.

Word choice matters. The right word not only draws the reader into a story, it lets the author tailor specific meanings to make specific points. What I write in first draft sometimes feels like instructions to future-me, explanations of what is happening, noted and forgotten in order to prevent halting composition or breaking my fugue. Meta. When there is no reference or context, I do think it is all right to tell the reader what is going on, to explain, to prevent misconception, to force the author's meaning down the reader's throats, hopefully courteously, especially when dealing with internal convolutions of a character's (or the narrator's) mind.

Mostly, however, I find myself reading these explanations of mine and often replacing to-be constructions with active verbs like ran or shove, removing attributive-sense constructions like he-saw/heard/felt, adding description through action, and bringing in the senses, all five in a paragraph or passage if possible. Sentences get recast, rewritten. Thus not, "He saw a rose," but, "He inhaled through his nose, turned, and reached for a velvety red petal, but, always clumsy, scratched his thumb."

Do you see what I did?

Such things effect pacing. It's a trade off. Making experience concrete adds weight to the narrative, adds words, and can extend the reading time going from point A to point B. The above example is 19 words instead of 5, but I never simply stated it was a rose.

#PennedPossibilities 926 — Do your characters play any sports, or did they play any in the past?

The devil-girl was a prizefighter. People will always make a sport of hitting each other, and betting on the outcome. The best way I can describe her sport would be mixed magic martial arts. She has scars, fewer than she gave.

Bolt did the day angel equivalent of track and field in high school. It includes sprint, high altitude, and marathon flying, air acrobatics (stunts), weight hauling, and obstacle courses (hurdles in three dimensional space). She considers flying tandem her favorite sport but, though it is manifestly physical, it isn't a sport.

Not keen on AI writing or coding, but I've found XCode absurdly hard to use to setup or revise existing projects that were open sourced and require updating. Using AI to actually figure out project settings NOT coding, interests me. I want AI to do scut work and leave the creativity to me. I know, good luck finding that.

Cribbed from @gruber

Apple Newsroom:

Xcode 26.3 introduces support for agentic coding, a new way in Xcode for developers to build apps using coding agents such as Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex. With agentic coding, Xcode can work with greater autonomy toward a developer’s goals — from breaking down tasks to making decisions based on the project architecture and using built-in tools.

#PennedPossibilities 925 — Would your characters enjoy camping? Why or why not?

Rainy Days has led armies and started wars (you know, outside, overland, mud, dirt), and spent quite a number of years as an ascetic when she took a dose of fuckitol and lived in a cave (the so-called resignation interregnum). Not sure if she liked camping particularly, but I do know she recently ran a training for her pretorians somewhere isolated and for which they flew quite an amount of supplies. Rainy Days interrupts Bolt having fun with Blue out in nature (but not camping) by literally flying circles around Bolt, who is an amazing flier. It's then that Bolt notices the supplies (presumably for camping) being hauled, as Rainy Days orders her newest praetorian, Blue, to attend bad weather training with her and the rest of her team. Not sure if anyone in attendance likes the camping, actually, though in the modern age, I suspect the Rainy Days will be glamping.

The devil-girl deserves a mention. She lived homeless half a year. Different kind of camping. One of the times she ran away, she trekked the equivalent of from New York to Tallahassee to Denver, with a backpack. She seemed to think of it as a Zen thing. That ends immediately before the WIP begins.

Everybody else: They're city boys and girls and wouldn't see the attraction.

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.02.07 — Share a pair of consecutive lines of a current or recent project. Everyone: What does the first line promise? Does the second line fulfil that promise?

EDIT: It's a game! "Everyone" is an invite for readers to say what the first line promises and whether or not the second line delivers.I seated up my reply to accommodate.

First pair of sentences:

As I looked back, she waved a hand dismissively and said, "Anyway, I've a delivery to make—" and I let her catch up so I could see her face without straining my neck, "and someone to make very happy." She whistled a tune with her arms out, swinging, now girly thanks to her hair having tied itself into pigtails; I'd missed that—

Second pair of sentence (consecutive to the first pair):

She flashed that lascivious smile. My heart skipped a beat.

#ScribesAndMakers #TTMD ☼ 2026.02.07 — Talk To Me Day. Featured Creator Art of Goulwen R @art_of_goulwenr

I'm a big fan of your art; I may have mentioned that before. I didn't mention the other day in SAM when I could have that I am a fan of Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo and Steve Gallaci's Albedo books. Both have great artwork and great characters, and say a lot about humanity despite being in the "funny animal" genre, but you mentioned yesterday that storytelling is most important to you. In that respect, what I've learned from Stan Sakai's work is compact storytelling. Most of what he writes is novelistic, it's short stories.

Why do you feel compelled to meld art and words? When I've commissioned cover art and bought interstitial images, I've worked to make it enhance the story. What does art bring to your story that can't be rendered with words alone? Some writers say they love writing longhand with a pen because it slows them down—lets them think things out. Is this a factor as to how your artwork plays into your creativity? Or something else? It occurs to me that art + words without description = playwriting. What motivates you to give equal footing to art and words? Do you imagine your work staged?

Sorry for rambling! It's late at night and I may be a bit tired…

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.02.06 — From start to finish, how much time elapses in your current WIP?

About two deeks[sic]†, with 70% of the novel written. The first part of the novel happens over a few hours, and thence forward over a few days. The end of the novel could extend out for half-a-year, depending on whether I overlap plot lines from a story that has an SC (the devil-girl) as an MC, or I resolve it in a more cozy way without the mid-story climax in the devil-girl's story being shown from Bolt's (the MC's") very frightened POV. To fully answer, the elapsed time from start to finish could be as little as four deeks or as much as half a year.

=-=-=-=-=-=
†A deek is a dozen days, and very clear in context. They don't use a lunar calendar of quarters of a moon, or a moon (7 days and 28 days). Their year is subjective and divisible by 12 also, but explaining why is spoilers. Dozens shows up in other significant ways, too.

#PennedPossibilities 924 — SC POV: Who do you think would be the most likely to start a food fight, and why? What food would they reach for first?

[Rainy Days from Reluctant Moon:] Streak and Thorn Rose are a rare pair of lovers where opposites definitely attract. Being as they've been friends since he saved her from bullies when she was 10 and he 11, they can be very sweet and sweaty when in the same room. It's adorable, really, and given the right teasing correction from Streak, Thorn Rose—who lacks good common sense and often does the screwiest things—she'd throw something mashed at him, perhaps even during a state dinner if they got into each other to the exclusion of all else, as they often do. I'm definitely admitting them to the Academy of Thaumaturgy!

I've learned not to be ashamed of a good vocabulary. Word choice matters. Now, if I could only deploy those words while speaking with others that would be fabulous.

#ScribesAndMakers 2026.02.06 — Our featured creator makes graphic novels. As a reader, which do you think is more important in a graphic novel, art or words?

Art, character, story, layout, words, in that order. Words are the least important, and could be omitted completely. But character is emotion, and if emotions aren't clear, no words will make the book work. Our featured creator does all of these well.

#PennedPossibilities 923 — Tell us about something a character of yours feels confidently about.

Oddly, in the current work, most of the characters have had their confidence shaken, a lost fight, a job that conflicts family obligations, understanding they have taken the wrong road in life, responsibility for sister they'd like to shirk but can't, oppression by gender norms that prevents them from proving themselves. Even the most powerful person alive admits her confidence is a façade.

Only Lightening Bolt—the MC, whose life is a mess, plagued by growing apathy and little personal freedom—can truly claim she's confident. The only thing she's able to freely do is fly (she's a day angel). Her beautiful owl-patterned multi-toned blue wings define her being, and with her circumscribed existence, she's trained herself like a fiend. Already an athlete at 17, at days from turning 30 she's tuned herself perfectly. Strong. Never mistakable for a cartoon character, she's maintained her flexibility and her femininity. She's knows she's not the best, not a record holder. An analogy from baseball describes her: she'd be the utility man, able to pitch, hit, play shortstop, never to hit a home run. She's capable of captaining the team. She even teaches flight skills to friends. If you want someone who can fly lightening fast, fly cross country all day, fly tandem, haul heavy cargo, do stunts? Pick her. She'll give you a wink and a thumbs up. She's confident she can do it all. Faced with the main series antagonist, who's a monster flier who made a point of literally flying circles around her in a middle chapter to test her, Bolt remains confident that she's the best flier she can be.

#WordWeavers 2026.02.05 — If you found out that someone had to live your MC’s life (like in the “Stranger than Fiction” movie), would you change the story?

I've watched some Isekai anime recently about people reincarnated (or teleported) into a fantasy world or a game world they are familiar with, and in one case wrote. It's a horrifying concept, deeply disturbing, would be horrifying to experience. However, I subscribe to the crucible theory when living my life: I can imagine how I would act in situations (the essence of writing fiction), but when I'm in those situations (burning in the crucible) I rarely act as I imagined due to the situation, you know, actually being REAL.

I can't make this question real. It feels like a test of empathy, but I'd have to feel the danger is realistic to say, yes, I'll change what I wrote. I can't get from here to there. Besides which, isn't all fiction about putting someone through relative hell to see how they might grow or wither?

Would I want anybody to live Lightning Bolt's life, as an ordinary high school jock being forced to work for the mob? Would I want anybody not the devil-girl forced to live the devil-girl's life? It's her philosophy of life that makes her a survivor and no random person would manage that. Would I want anybody to live like Wintereyes, giving up part of their humanity to speak to wolves (and dragons, and other creatures), and to live amongst them? Nobody has the innate kindness she possesses, and as a result would have the kindness necessary to deal with subsequently being forced to live amongst humans who are both alien to her and who covet her ability to the extent they feel threatened.

Would I want people to live these lives? Other than vicariously?

No.

But that isn't the point, either.

There is a certain synchronicity with this question and and that of another hashtag game I wrote a post for today: #ScribesAndMakers eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11601673.
