#477 Don’t calculate post-hoc power using observed estimate of effect size

Thoughts: Good discussion and many useful references. Even big journals print stupid stuff.

PressGazette: AI answers cite ‘narrow range’ of top newsbrands led by BBC and Guardian. “AI answers from OpenAI, Google and Perplexity draw on a ‘narrow range’ of the biggest publishers when responding to news queries, according to new research from UK thinktank IPPR. Looking at Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, the research found that on average 34% of […]

the framing of this article is absolutely infuriating --- not at all objective journalism.

A tiny coastal community

and

battling an international wind energy giant

so, right up front, establishes a narrative of a david vs goliath fight to the death, with nimby luddite climate-deniers cast as the poor little good bloke, being assailed & attacked by a nasty oppressive bully who wants to... provide more green renewable energy for us.

why does abc keep doing this shit?

RE: toot.community/@5teverin0/1159

"Political journalism has developed a set of practices that make surprise the default response to predictable events. Treat every denial as meaningful. Frame every warning from advocacy groups as partisan overreach. Insist on a both-sides structure even when one side is lying. Worry more about being called biased than about being accurate. Do all of this, consistently, for years, and you will be surprised when the things people warned you about come to pass..."

The halo/horn effect is when one moment/situation can become a positive or negative impression, leading to either favoritism or rejection. It is important to recognize this bias and not allow it to affect decision-making.

A quotation from Adlai Stevenson

There are men among us who use “patriotism” as a club for attacking other Americans. What can we say for the self-styled patriot who thinks that a Negro, a Jew, a Catholic, or a Japanese-American is less an American than he? That betrays the deepest article of our faith, the belief in individual liberty and equality which has always been the heart and soul of the American idea.

Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965) American diplomat, statesman
Speech (1952-08-27), “The Nature of Patriotism,” American Legion Convention, Madison Square Garden, New York City

Interestingly, the one detail about method was that the answers were freeform. Of course this means that people wrote whatever was uppermost in mind -which is going to be hugely influenced by recency and frequency especially in media. So a temperature taking of a self-referential system which only really tells us what media messages are most prominent at any given time.
Of course a better methodology would be to do what you imply: ask specific questions.

"The world's three major religions…"

Um? I think Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists might beg to differ. Unless that's whom you meant?

Also, how is Judaism a "major" religion? There are individual cities with more people than we have worldwide.

Wikipedia at 25 grapples with new challenges arising from generative AI

Wikipedia celebrated its 25th birthday this month. Given the centrality of Wikipedia to so much activity online, it is hard to remember (or to imagine, for those who are younger) a time without Wikipedia. The latest statistics are impressive:

Wikipedia is viewed nearly 15 billion times every month.

Wikipedia contains over 65 million articles across more than 300 languages.

Wikipedia is […]

"In 2009, when researchers polled 1,350 Americans about the video at the center of Scott v. Harris, most agreed with the Supreme Court’s majority view. But the researchers identified “sharp differences of opinion” along cultural and ideological lines, including race, income and a person’s views on societal hierarchy."

Perspective, shakiness, playback speed, selective attention, accompanying narrative, false memory, culture, and ideology all affect how people interpret video evidence, and help to explain why different people have different perceptions of what the video shows.

Divergent interpretations of videos from Minneapolis illustrate these effects.

A quotation from Lyman Beecher

They are perfectly aware how little ground there can be to hope that men may be reasoned out of their errours, when in fact they were never reasoned into them, but adopted them from prejudice, passion, or policy.

Lyman Beecher (1775-1863) American minister, preacher, abolitionist

Ideological bias in the production of research findings

"Does immigration affect public support for social welfare programs? The researchers estimated 1253 alternative regression models, and the estimated impacts ranged from strongly negative to strongly positive. We find that teams composed of pro-immigration researchers estimated more positive impacts of immigration on public support for social programs, while anti-immigration teams estimated more negative impacts."
