Happy #lunarnewyear to all my fellow #AAPI members. May the #yearofthehorse be fortuitous & healthy for you & your families.
I stumbled upon a clip of this from my friend's Instagram reel & watched the whole thing on YouTube right after. I didn't realize it was made in 2021, but the messages & discussions are still very relevant today.
It's a roundtable of famous Asian-American actors, athletes, chefs, comedians & advocates sitting down to share a dinner & discuss their experiences as an #Asian in a safe space.
I recommend watching it for the community & camaraderie (including the delicious food!) but also for the important promotion of #DiversityEquityInclusion in these times where #POC experiences & identities are being attacked by white nationalism.

Millbrae is the center of recent mainland Chinese migration to the Bay Area. It has a big lunar new year event today. Streets are PACKED

People dressed up in traditional garb.

Nice to see a plurality of different new year celebrations. A lot of overlaps but some differences.

For example, most Chinese people eat sweet tangyuan for the 15th day of the lunar new year but the local SF Toishanese folks do it savory.

The SAVE America Act would screw the #AAPI community.

Per APIAVote.org:

"20 percent of AAPIs don’t have a birth certificate on hand, 14 percent of AAPIs don’t have a passport, and only 8 percent have naturalization papers readily available."

Also, "AAPI adult citizens are also roughly two-thirds foreign-born, meaning issues naturalized citizens face would be disproportionately higher for AAPIs than for other communities."

TL;dr: a lot of AAPIs wouldn't be able to vote.

@MLNow

This is an amazing #AAPI story!!! 👏👏👏

My father (b. 1913 d. 1989) read #ChinesePoetry & I'm sure would have enjoyed the class.

I've asked a better connected & more fluent #Cantonese speaking friend of mine to tell her friends about this article & the #Chinese poetry class to see if she can help to add more as well as younger members to the class to keep it going.

The more she won, the worse the comments got. By 16, she says, “I was winning everything, and I felt like people wanted to take away from my talent and my hard work, and not give me the credit I deserved. I was foolish enough to believe them, too.” It took a long time for her to heal. “Now I don’t care,” she says. “Say what you want.”

#EileenGu from #SF skiing for #China not the #USA qualified in 2nd place in the Women's #Slopestyle earlier today after falling in the 1st of her 2 qualifying runs. Eileen won the Silver Medal in this event in 2022.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding Gu's birth & citizenship.

Her father has never been identified by her or her mother & has only been identified as an "American" & #Harvard grad but given her physical appearance her father was probably white. So, she's most likely #Happa. Nothing wrong with that but it's curious why the identity of Gu's father has never been revealed or discussed.

Extraordinarily, while Gu was born, raised & primarily lives in the US but she was granted permanent residency in China in order to allow her to compete for China in the Olympics & other events. A special rule was passed in China in 2020 that allowed this to be done. Why & how this was achieved also has not been revealed or discussed. 🤷

✨ A Little (About) Joy ✨

I'm a mom of two wonderful boys and I was super into babywearing when they were little! Parenting is a huge part of my life and I love being a mom!

Are you a parent too? What’s a hobby/passion that kept you sane during those busy early years?

Did you know I'm a lawyer? I majored in Art History at Cal and loved analytical writing so became a lawyer. I practiced law until I had kids, and found my second career as an artist in my 40s!

What is your career journey?

I'm a first-gen Taiwanese American! I often went back to visit family, sightsee and eat. Knowing my roots and the energy of Taipei deeply inform my artwork and identity.

Where is one place that shaped who you are today?

Rewatched #RogersAndHammerstein's #TheFlowerDrumSong (1961) again yesterday.

Many #AsianAmericans, like me, have a love/hate relationship with this movie because of all of the #Asian & #Chinese stereotypes that it portrays & because most of the actors in the film weren't even Chinese.

The film is also pretty misogynistic & gender limiting too which is consistent with the times.

That said, I remember when how excited my mother & the Chinese community in #SFChinatown were when the movie was released because it was the 1st time that the Chinese were portrayed in the film with anything close to our reality & because it was the 1st & only film (until #TheJoyLuckClub (1993) in which the cast was almost entirely #Asian. . . .

It's nonetheless an important film to watch in terms of understanding how Asians are under represented in American media.

The Wiki synopsis of the film is pretty good & worth reading if you have any interest in the film & Asian American media.

Just watched a great independent movie called #Rosemead (2025).

The movie is based on a true story.

#LucyLiu plays an immigrant Asian woman who has cancer with only months to live. Her husband died of cancer a few years earlier & she is the sole caretaker for her son who is schizophrenic.

Her son is off his meds, is hearing voices, is acting out in response to those voices, commits an act of self harm & is preoccupied with news about mass killings.

The mother feels that she has to deal with these problems alone. She's worried that her son will not get proper care & treatment & that he might commit an act of mass violence against others after she dies.

So, in an act of desperation, she decides to take action to prevent either from happening. Can't say more without spoiling it.

This is one of the BEST movies that I've seen recently.

I rate it an rare 8 out of 10. It's in limited distribution. Lucy gives an amazing performance. See it as soon as you can, where ever you can.

The thing is we've been chasing freedom since we got here. But what are we really competing for if we look down on other Brown people, and suck up to people who only like us because "We're not like the other Brown people"? The bar is beneath the floor. The self-esteem is vacant.thebadindianther... a Pritam, Sunidhi Chau...

We are not "better" or more deserving than other Brown people. You've lost the plot the moment you start believing you are above or below anyone else. People-pleasing gets you nowhere. It doesn't keep you safe. It keeps you stuck.

The west coast of the United States is now seen as a sort of hub for Asian American strength, but as the politicians tell us today that we are voting bloc in either direction, it’s important to remember that the politics of the west coast are tied to the violence, incarceration, detention and massacres against us.

They called us ‘unassimilable’, just as they do that now to others, while pointing to us to say ‘be more like them’.

Reading about san francisco's first chinese sex worker, Ah Toy.

She arrived in 1849 from Guangzhou.

"She was unusually tall for a Chinese woman, with delicate, bound feet and a slender boding and laughing eyes. She was 'strangely alluring', as one admirer later put it."

"Her first place of business [..] was in an alley off Clay Street, between Dupont and Kearny Streets. The line of men often stretched down the block. After disembarking their steamboats from the interior, miners would often break into a run to claim a spot. The men paid Ah Toy with an ounce of gold dust, which she carefully weighted. In return, she gave men a chance to 'gaze on her coutenance'"

Her lover was John A. Clark, the leader of a special task force.. investigating prostitution in the city.

How Stanford football coach Tavita Pritchard emerged as natural leader - SF Chronicle

Tavita Pritchard flashed his natural charisma throughout Tuesday’s news conference introducing him as Stanford’s head coach ...

Pritchard brought most of his family — including his parents; his wife, Caroline Kusin Pritchard, and their four kids — to Tuesday’s news conference. He also wore a striking, red “ulafala” (like a lei) around his neck, a nod to his Samoan heritage.
