‘Can animal populations adapt to climate change by becoming genetically similar to more southerly populations?’ That is the question posed by ecologist Natalie van Dis.

Van Dis will use a Veni grant to investigate whether the same genes that cause differences between northern and southern populations are also relevant for the adaptation of animal populations to climate change over time.

This is one of the few if not the only moth to fly in winter. Only the male flies. The female is flightless with only vestigial wings. The moth belongs to the genus Operophtera. Only two species of Operophtera are found in North America. One is native, the other came from Europe. These moths hang out by our back porchlight in winter. #moth #Operophtera #wintermoth #entomology #PNW
