Argentina Mandarin on Shortwave via WRMI

Criticism on World of Radio logs this week:

ARGENTINA [non]. 9455, Mon Feb 9 at 2304, RAE relay via WRMI again in Chinese, ex-Japanese, ex-Portuguese, ex-Spanish. For all those Chinese Argentines across the USA? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

I actually hope the program will remain on shortwave and that I can catch the signal. If the RAE website is somehting to go by, their Mandarin service keeps us posted (most recently on February 3 to 6, February 10 + 12), while the English service doesn’t. Last podcast upload in English by today (Saturday UTC) was January 30.

Not sure though if the transmissions on WRMI are always the latest productions from Buenos Aires.

NDR Schedule for Christmas Eve 2025 All Ships Edition

Northern German Radio (Norddeutscher Rundfunk, NDR) is scheduled to broadcast on shortwave on Christmas Eve, i. e. December 24, from 18:00 to 21:00 UTC. The broadcaster will record greetings from seafarer families in advance, at Hamburg’s Duckdalben International Seamen’s Club (in German: Seemannsmission) on December 14 from 15:00 to 17:00 UTC, or 16:00 to 18:00 local time in Hamburg.

The schedule used to include transmissions from Moosbrunn, Austria. Last Christmas marked the last time that Austria helped to air the program, as Moosbrunn transmission site has since been demolished.
NDR doesn’t mention transmitters in its release, but Eike Bierwirth does. The transmitter information above was published or most recently updated on November 20.

Radio Slovakia International is important – Keep it up!

Just e-mailed:

Dear Madam or Sir

I have learned with concern that Slovak Television and Radio plans to dismantle Radio Slovakia International.

Having been a listener for at least 15 years, especially to your German service, I owe them many insights into Slovak culture and your country’s economy, from general data to the significance of inland water transport. It is also great to listen to German tourists being interviewed by the English service. RSI plays in a particular radio league: it is a truly European station, from the heart of our continent.

It is true that such a service costs money, but I believe that it is worth every euro spent on it. Slovakia has become more visible on many people’s minds because of her international radio station.

From Christmas and Easter customs to castles, landscapes and narration, Radio Slovakia has kept us listeners both informed and curious about your country. Don’t flick it away. It is your country’s voice to the world.

Yours faithfully
Franz Bleeker

Writing Prompt: Stick Up for Radio Slovakia International

It appears that Radio Slovakia International could be shut down as soon as December 31st of this year,” Radio Slovakia’s Ladislava Hudzovicova has been quoted this week. “Wavescan” on Sunday is scheduled to provide further details. Addresses to write to and to make Slovak Radio management aware of how much the country’s foreign radio matters are also provided:

RSI is urging its listeners around the world to send letters of support to the management, in an effort to stop plans to dismantle the station, and to encourage management to continue RSI’s broadcasts. They are asking for your letters of support to be sent to three email addresses. You could send one message to all three addresses. And here are the email addresses:
The first one is: [gr@stvr.sk](mailto:gr@stvr.sk)
The second address is: [podatelna@stvr.sk](mailto:podatelna@stvr.sk)
And the third address is: [Martina.Flasikova@stvr.sk](mailto:Martina.Flasikova@stvr.sk)

Radio Slovakia International is still on the air – for now -, but apparently, the country’s central radio bureaucrats can’t see the value of these foreign-language programs from the heart of Europe.
Mysterious Slovakia, indeed.
