Nintendo's Virtual Boy for Switch is a wonderful way to experience a buried relic, but I'm not keen on its need for both a subscription and a purchase

Beat Wario Land Virtual Boy yesterday, that was a fun game! Was fun seeing it all in 3D on the Switch VB app.

Virtual Boy Wario Land (Switch 2): COMPLETED!

Yes! I was one of those idiots that paid SIXTY SIX POUNDS for a piece of plastic that you put your Switch (or Switch 2) in, so you can sit awkwardly while playing games made for one of the worst consoles ever made! It’s like having two red-tinted Game Boys stuck in front of your eyes that you can only really play at a table (or, as I did, on the sofa with a teetering pile of lap cushions), all so you can get a not especially impressive 3D effect in some poorly realised games. Idiot.

Just lookit though. LOOKIT.

Although I’ve never owned a Virtual Boy, I have played on a few and can say that this Switch peripheral manages to recreate the ridiculous of the original flop console admirably. With my Nintendo Online subscription I also get access to 7 games (about a third of those ever released – most of the rest are on the way), and having tried them all only Virtual Boy Wario Land really works.

And, against all the odds, it’s great.

It’s a pretty straightforward platformer, with about 20 levels and some power ups that let you smash blocks or shoot fireballs, but the 3D comes in as there are “front” and “back” layers to the playfield. Much like Mutant Mudds, I suppose, which I know came much later. There are special blocks that “throw” you in and out of the screen, as well as pipes and doorways that sometimes do the same. Some of the levels are almost 3D mazes as you try to find a key to open the lift to the next level. Every few levels you get a boss, which also tends to swap plane in some way or another.

The 3D effect is subtle, but it’s nice. I don’t think the game would have suffered by being a straight Game Boy or SNES title, though. It’s hard to see from the screenshots how well it works because it seems so damn dark and the dual-screen thing (one for each eye) means you lose the 3D completely. But anyway, nice game shame about the delivery mechanism, I suppose.

Love the weirdness, hate the paywall: Nintendo’s Virtual Boy on Switch is a brilliant time‑capsule (Wario Land actually shines) but locking 3D behind both a paid peripheral and a Switch Online subscription feels off.

Uncomfortable to play, quirky to love — still glad it exists.

I can't recommend Nintendo's Virtual Boy Switch package — but I love that it exists.

The Switch headset nails the original stereoscopic 3D and Wario Land still shines, yet most games are dated, uncomfortable, and built for short breaks.

A quick update, our Virtual Boy tripod adapter is now compatible with the Nintendo Switch Virtual Boy accessory!

Dear Internet, have we agreed upon generic-noun for what this "Virtual Boy" enclosure IS, yet?

It's NOT really a VR headset or glasses. Those feel innacurate.

Because I just called it a "viewfinder". AND I kinda feel like that should be it.

EDIT: For those not familiar, it's a box, with eyeholes and lenses, that you slot your Switch 2 into, and it runs a VirtualBoy emulator, rendering two different scenes, one for each eyeball to get the stereoscopic effect of the original.

I love that Nintendo has brought back the #virtualboy and I'm very tempted to get one, but the idea of buying hardware that can pretty much exclusively be used for a subscription service is ROUGH for me.

To clarify what I mean when I say the visor isn't removable:
On the original VB the faceplate with the foam on it pops off leaving the lenses in place (system on the right)
This is a common piece to be missing, but the way the lenses pop off on the new VB (left) is different and not interchangeable

Like a lot of people, my new Virtual Boy accessory for the Switch came in this weekend and I had a lot of fun comparing it against my original!
The stands are just about identical, but there are some changes to the design around the nose, and the visor is also no longer removable.
Really interesting to see design revisions on this system like this.
#nintendo #virtualboy #switch #retrogaming

The new Virtual Boy accessory in it's box next to my original Virtual BoyA wide side-by-side of the two google sections, new version in the left showing sharper lines around the nose, and lack of removable tabs for the visorThe two stands next to each other. The new one has a slight lip at the top where it secures to the console, but are otherwise nigh indistinguishableThe two Virtual Boys assembled and side by side, side and shape and colour all match and it's difficult to distinguish them apart at a glance
