🇬🇧 Echo & The Bunnymen "Heaven Up Here" – 1981

A darker, more claustrophobic leap from their debut with post-punk as atmosphere: moody, echo-drenched, and quietly feral, like a storm building inside the songs...

#nowplaying Visit Venus - Music For Space Tourism Vol. 1

I found this many years back and as is often the case, was intrigued by the cover (and then the title). Lounge-y and chill, perfect to have a coffee with, while pondering some code.

#vinyl #vinylrecords

The album "Music For Space Tourism Vol.1" by Visit Venus playing on a Technics SL-1500C turntable. The cover is some abstract retro-futuristic art/mural, in front of which, some very blurry people are walking, giving the impression of it being an exhibit at a world fair or similar venue.

VOODOO LUST
Voodoo Lust
1987 Australia pressing

I’m absolutely in love with this record.

I only just discovered this band; a meaty, garage-y #powerpop 4-piece that didn’t put out too much.
Just three 7” singles, and a pair of 12” E.P.s, of which this is one of them.

Every song on this is killer.

“Gossip” is legitimately a great song. I don’t know what their notoriety was Down Under, but that tune sounds like a fucking hit to me.

The first song on the second side, “She Be Mine” is an excellent jangly, powerpop song, and the closer “I Tried” has a lot of heart to it. Kind of a romantic pop song.

Just five great songs.
Now I need to find more of their records, cuz I’m very smitten with this.

If there’s any followers of mine from Australia that can give me any further info on them, please do.
Loving this shit.

THE FATAL FLOWERS
Johnny D. Is Back
1988 U.S. pressing

The first full-length FF album, Younger Days, still eludes me, but I do have their second.

The Netherlands loves The Fatal Flowers. They are one of the most revered Dutch bands in history, but unfortunately, they never really good break out anywhere else.

The songs on JDIB are a bit different than the ones on Younger Days, but far more accomplished when it comes to songwriting. It’s a totally refined record, and most singer/songwriter friends that I know appreciate it a great deal.

Just an excellent band who wrote great tunes.

🇬🇧 Bauhaus "Swing the Heartache: The BBC Sessions" – 1996

An essential document of Bauhaus at their sharpest. These BBC recordings strip away studio gloss and expose the band’s core: tense rhythms, skeletal guitars, and Peter Murphy’s theatrical presence...

TWINS
Birds And Dogs / I'm Staying Alive (Long Versions)
1982 Europe 12” single
@ #45rpm

Top-shelf primo German #synthpop from the #80s for last (and short) spin of the night.

There’s something about the creepy drumbeat and eerie synth on “Birds And Dogs” that gets me. Sounds like something Buffalo Bill would dance around to nude in Silence Of The Lambs. 😂

If you have the chance to listen to the first three Twins records (Modern Lifestyle is my favorite), I highly recommend that you do. ESPECIALLY if you’re a fan of the genre.

Twins had a great run.
SIX albums over twelve years starting in ‘81, and then a SURPRISINGLY good reunion album called Living For The Future after being dormant for 25 years.

Excellent band.

Raspberries – Starting Over

Here's the last album by the Raspberries – Their whole four-album discography ran from April 1972 through September 1974. This may only be their fourth-best record, but it's still pretty good.

Front cover of Raspeberries, "Starting Over". There are four pictures, one of each of the band members, all done in a vignette style so that only their heads and shoulders, and a bit of background, are visible. Profiled type in perspective shadow says "Raspberries" at the top, and "Starting Over" at the bottom.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS
Mirror Moves
1984 Canada pressing

ALWAYS a good day for some Furs!

The first four Psych Furs albums are absolutely perfect, but the Mirror Moves/Talk Talk Talk back-to-back exercise is the most satisfying #80s #alternative pair for me.

I could never pick which of those two I like better, but Mirror Moves is so friggin great.

Great pair of singles in “The Ghost In You” and “Heaven”, but the rest of the album’s material is SO STRONG.

Richard Butler’s voice is so singular. There’s no confusing him with anybody else. When you hear him… you know it’s HIM.

Now… can we PLEASE get somebody to press Butler’s post-Furs band Love Spit Love’s self-titled album to vinyl?

It’s fucking laughable that there’s no vinyl of THAT that exists.

VARIOUS ARTISTS
What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen No. 6
1986 UK Compilation

A wonderfully quirky collection of #80s #indie #alternative #newwave and #punk that originally came with a fanzine called What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, which was run by Chris Seventeen.

Unfortunately, the magazine was not with this when I bought it used, but that’s fine. This comp has some great stuff on it from Nikki Sudden, The Creeping Candies, The Bible Belt and The Spinning Wighats to name just a few.

Really cool songs. Half of which I’d never heard before, which is why finding these odd little gems is great!

#nowplaying Valium Aggelein - Black Moon

Slow, atmospheric Space Rock from a band aka Duster. Very calm, yet delightfully exciting at times.

#vinyl #vinylrecords #spacerock

The album "Black Moon" by Valium Aggelein (aka Duster) playing on a Technics SL-1500C turntable. The cover shows a photo of the thinly crescent moon on an all-black cover. The cover is very glossy, so there is some reflection of my furniture on it. The record is a gray-milky-translucent white, referred to in the promo material as "moon dust gray".

CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN
Telephone Free Landslide Victory
2025 UK RSD reissue
Orange Clear + Marbled #vinyl

Wonderful reissue of a great album, here.

In the case of CVB, I had to work backwards. As a teenager in the #90s , I was a big fan of David Lowery’s POST CVB band, Cracker.

Three really great albums with awesome hit tunes that I loved like “Teen Angst”, “Low”, “I Hate My Generation”, and “Get Off This”.

It was only through that band that I learned of Camper, and the amazing records THEY made.

Here, the songs “Take The Skinheads Bowling” and “Ambiguity Song” alone make it worth owning, but luckily, the whole record is great start to finish.

Listening to this right now reminded me that I need to find an upgrade copy of Key Lime Pie, because my original press is pretty damn ragged.

BRIAN ENO
Music For Films
1978 UK pressing

A very loose-y goose-y batch of songs that Eno intended for filmmakers to use in their movies, though no films in particular.

A lot of them are very short, and the gear that Eno used would also find its way onto David Bowie’s LOW.

Some of this material actually DID make it into some movies. The two most famous examples being Rock N Roll High School with The Ramones, and the killer 1986 John Woo movie A Better Tomorrow.

This is not something I listen to often, but since it’s snowing like a motherfucker outside right now, I figured it would be a good choice.
