DHARMA BUMS
Haywire b/w Shake
1988 U.S. 7ā€ single
Clear vinyl

I guess tonight is a night for excellent singles with GREAT labels.

Super jangly late-#80s #alternative rock from the state of Oregon.

When I saw ā€œproduced by Conrad Uno and Scott McCaugheyā€, i knew it’d be right up my alley. Killer guitars, great melodies… flashes of early R.E.M and Young Fresh Fellows?

If you like the #powerpop and #altrock from the #80s , you’ll dig it.

And again… LOVE that PopLlama label. Beautiful!

TELLERS / THE MERCENARIES
Fat Beef b/w Fat Beef (version)
1977 Jamaica 7ā€ single

A few things about this wonderful single:

This is some deliriously infectious, bright, feel-good reggae. It’s hard to not hear this wonderful tune and not get a little burst of pep. It’s so damn good.

Secondly… just look at THAT LABEL!

That is one of the coolest looking labels I’ve ever seen. If you were a record collector, came across this in a shop and saw THAT label, you wouldn’t even care what music was on it. You’d just get it. No questions asked. Because the Mummy would tell you all you needed to know. šŸ˜‚

Undoubtedly, that’s more than likely what I did, wherever and however long ago I found this.

Just a great single! šŸ”„

COLIN NEWMAN
A-Z
1980 Canada pressing

The first Colin Newman solo album that was meant to be the next Wire album.
That is… until EMI decided to get fucky.

It’s a wonderfully weird record. There’s definitely some none-Wire sounding moments on it, but ultimately, it doesn’t stray too far from that band’s awesomeness. It’s every bit as great as those first three records, and to this day, it’s far and away the best solo work.

ā€œ& Juryā€ is awesome, and ā€œAloneā€ was actually used in The Silence Of The Lambs.

STRESS MAGNETS
Lindsay B/W Kendall Fell Asleep In The Corn
1994 U.S. 7ā€ single

This might be one of my favorite pulls from the downstairs wreckage so far.
Awesome, muscle-y #90s rock from Baltimore, Maryland.

Almost assuredly another I procured from Newbury Comics back in the day. I used to buy a LOT of 7ā€s like this, but so many didn’t make the journey with me from Boston to Van Isle 17 years ago.

Glad this one did.
Love them guitars.

1983 UK 7ā€ single

Another awesome one from downstairs.

A KILLER tune, whose lyrics are even more relevant today than they were in 1983.

GREAT song.

Billy Strings, Me and Dad, 2022 on Rounder

Love this album which features Billy Strings and his dad, Terry Barber. It includes a print of artwork Billy did as a child ā€œWhen I grow up, I want to be a bluegrass player.ā€ Mission accomplished, I’d say.

There’s also a great long concert on YouTube live from Traverse City Michigan:

My copy, direct from Rounder, is a Memphis Record Pressing issue in standard black vinyl.

DAVID BYRNE WITH GHOST TRAIN ORCHESTRA
Who Is The Sky?
2025 Worldwide pressing
Apple Green vinyl

This was my album of the year for 2025.
Few NEW albums have given me as much listening pleasure as Who Is The Sky?

At their heart, these songs are quite simple. Incredibly bright, playful, and brimming with personality. The MVP award here goes to producer Kid Harpoon and NYC’s incredible Ghost Train Orchestra. Their work really brought these great songs to life.

There are two gems here in particular that I could listen to forever: "I Met the Buddha at a Downtown Party" (which is wickedly funny), and ā€œThe Avant Gardeā€, which may be one of my favorite Byrne songs EVER.

The album clocks in at a very tight and compact 37 minutes. As soon as it’s over, I just want to start it over again.

GREAT album, and one of Byrne’s best solo efforts.
Absolutely love it.

SHEL SILVERSTEIN
Inside Shel Silverstein
1970 U.S. reissue

A record (and artist) with very deep roots from my childhood.

I (like MANY others) grew up on the holy trifecta of Silverstein’s books; Where The Sidewalk Ends, A Light In The Attic, and Falling Up.

I was completely unaware that he was a musician and had albums until I was in my late teens, when I started seeing them in record stores and thrift shops.

Inside… is a reissue of his 1962 album Inside Folk Songs, and the material has the same quirky, humorous and biting humor as the poems from his books.

In fact, two of these songs ARE in Where The Sidewalk Ends; ā€œBoa Constrictorā€ and ā€œThe Unicornā€, the former which was covered by Johnny Cash.

To this day, whether it’s his albums or books, Shel still makes me happy.

THE DOORS
The Doors
Year Unknown Canada repress
(Maple Leaf Logo)

Had a hankerin’ to play this the last week or so.

Gun to my head, if I had to pick my favorite classic rock album of all time, it would probably be the self-titled Doors debut.

I was born a whole decade after this album came out. And when I started REALLY exploring music, most of that late #60s flower power hippie bullshit was never really my bag. Which is why I think I DID respond to The Doors (and some Hendrix).

It just sounded so much darker, more dangerous, and the polar opposite to most of the other music of that genre from that time. A LOT of that music STILL sounds awful to me, but not THIS.

I will never tire of listening to this album. There’s not a single filler track on it. Every song is killer, front to back.

TERRY CASHMAN
The Jim Dandy Pet Food Company Salutes Phil Niekro
1984 U.S. 7ā€ single

A fun one that you can file under ā€œWHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?!?!ā€

So, the A side of this, ā€œFor All The Years (A Tribute To Phil Niekro)ā€, is a schmaltzy, acoustic love song to legendary knuckleball pitcher Phil Neikro, who played for 4 MLB teams over his illustrious career.

However… THE B-SIDE is why I would have bought this.
And here’s why:

There was an episode from Season 3 of The Simpsons called ā€œHomer At The Batā€, where the power plant hire PRO baseball players as ringers to play in the power plant’s softball game.

There’s a goofy song in that episode called ā€œTalkin’ Softballā€ that I THOUGHT The Simpsons made up.

It’s actually a spoof of THIS B-side, ā€œTalkin' Baseball (Baseball And The Braves)ā€, and The Simpsons actually got Terry Cashman to sing THEIR version, too.

It took me 20 years to discover this.

BAUHAUS
Kick In The Eye (Searching For Satori) E.P.
1982 UK 7ā€ E.P.

Another cool 45 rescued from the downstairs catacombs.

For me, this single is all about the two songs on the flip side; ā€œHarryā€ and ā€œEarwaxā€, the former having an almost reggae feel to it, until Peter Murphy enters and turns it on its head. It’s literally ā€œisland Bauhausā€. Lol.
ā€œEarwaxā€ sounds like all of the famous monsters from history having an acid-fueled poetry reading/seance.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Imperial Bedroom, 1982 on Columbia

Seventh studio LP from Costello and the sixth with The Attractions, out of F-Beat in the UK and Columbia in the US. A must have for collectors of Costello or indeed the whole new wave / alternative era of the late seventies to mid eighties.
