Note: don't pay fucks like this. If traditional publishing isn't working, DIY. Vanity presses like these are leeches.

WRITERS:
I've worked as an editor for some years now, both in traditional publishing and freelance. There are five questions to ask if you are worried about getting scammed in the publishing industry.

Let's say you have an offer from a publisher, who says they want to publish your book...

1) Are they asking for money? Then it's definitely a scam.

2) Are they contacting you before reading your manuscript? Then it's definitely a scam.

3) Do they want you to sign a contract before they have read any of your manuscript? Then it's definitely a scam.

4) Have they approached you out of the blue on social media, and messaged you in your DMs? Then it's definitely a scam.

But mostly...

5) Does it feel like a scam? Then it's definitely a scam.

HERE’S HOW TRADITIONAL PUBLISHERS WORK:
They pay the author.
An author is never asked for a fee, ever.
They pay for editing, and run the book through multiple editors.
They pay for cover art, marketing, ISBNs, and other expenses.
They make money from book sales, not from the author.
Very few authors are chosen.
They have high standards.
The story must be approved and marketable.
Book sales are what keeps them in business.
The author and publisher split profits.
The majority of royalties usually goes to the publisher.
The publisher wants the rights to the book.

HERE’S HOW SELF-PUBLISHING WORKS:
The author writes the book.
The author edits or hires his/her own editor.
The author formats his/her book or hires someone to do it.
The author makes a cover or hires a cover designer.
The author publishes and markets the book themselves.
The author keeps all the rights and profits.

5/🧵 Copied from an anonymous author:

HERE’S HOW VANITY PUBLISHERS WORK:
They charge authors to publish their books.
They make money from authors.
They don’t make money from book sales.
Anyone can be published who pays them money.
There are no standards that are upheld.
Any editing done is very low-quality, sometimes no more than just using Grammarly.
No story is too boring, bad, or horribly written for them.
Book sales are irrelevant to them.
The author and vanity publisher split profits.
The majority of royalties are usually split 50/50.
The vanity publisher usually wants the rights to the book.

4/🧵 There are different paths to getting published. Each of the reputable routes requires at least some work on your part. It is NEVER easy.

#TraditionalPublishing is where a publisher (of books, magazines, etc.) edits your work and publishes it, AT NO COST TO YOU. However, you have to be savvy about where you submit your work, how you write your #QueryLetters, and sometimes you might need to first get an agent. You have to get used to rejection letters and keep submitting your work to publishers despite those rejections.

#VanityPress is where a scammer CLAIMS they are a reputable publisher, or sometimes calls themselves #HybridPublishing, but they are ALWAYS a scam. They ask you to pay them money and sign a contract. The money part is always the dead giveaway.

Basically: "If you have to pay, RUN AWAY."
