Wrote a big text post about if you want to read. Also in light of my site kinda being my link aggregator I cleaned things up a touch.

Got my copy of Hackers signed by Lee Felsenstein at the Vintage Computer Festival! His chapters were some of the most meaningful in the book to me; will treasure it always.

(And, by the way, it turns out he has a Patreon: patreon.com/lfelsenstein)

Another quick video from #VCFwest 2025 starting with @tubetime ‘s Monster 6502 and showing how dense and busy it was on Saturday. I heard attendance was nearly double last year. Maybe because it was the Amiga 40th anniversary or just because it’s awesome and more people are there…. Oooor a little of both.

I did get a bit trapped in the far end of the room at one point but with patience I was able to get out. All thing considered they did a pretty good job is keeping flow all around the event… for the most part.

So was a pretty smashing success all things considered. Our Windows Megatable had a lot of people come by, not one person said what we were doing was “too new”, and we only attracted one Linux Guy™ who told us how much Windows sucks.

Want to do it again but next year is Apple’s 50th so I’m swapping back over to Macs.

The event itself was much better this go around too, we had *working air conditioning* even!

The Amiga stuff was whatever I guess.

After reading more about the computers from Poland that I saw at , I noticed that the Cobra 1 only had an article in Polish Wikipedia, so I used it as the basis of a new article in English Wikipedia. @mwichary, please let me know if I made any egregious errors (or, of course, you can fix them yourself 🙂). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_1

I was at at the Computer History Museum today, and I ran across a few computers from Poland. @mwichary, do you know about these?

The Junior 800 computer from Poland, manufactured in the 1980sThe Meritum computer from Poland, manufactured in the 1980sThe Cobra-1 computer from Poland, first manufactured in 1984The Cobra Color computer from Poland, first manufactured in 2014

Also found an empty box for a Powerbook (100-series? because it didn't say) modem in the free room, I thought this note was funny considering Apple's current packaging practices... #VCFWest

Note about how this product is in a brown cardboard box for sustainability reasons (all Apple's current stuff comes in super thick white boxes)

And some photos from #VCFWest (1/2)

It is unfortunate that my career’s biggest cultural contribution shows up at the Computer History Museum in a visual context that very few people at the time would recognize. (Luckily someone at upstairs had AIM in its more common form, although on hilarious OSes.)

Photo of a museum poster displaying a chat with SmarterChild on a Mac.

The description says:

Launched in 2001, SmarterChild was a chatbot on AOL's Instant Messenger service and other platforms. Backed by a team of writers, Smarter Child was known for pithy replies and its ability to answer queries about sports, business, news, and more from online users.
Initially positioned as a way for children to access reliable information, SmarterChild chats became a popular form of entertainment. Two computers with flat screen monitors display the Windows 95 era AOL Instant Messenger UI; the left running on PCPro and the right on CDE somehow.

They even had an Amiga running Wipeout. This is an extremely uncommon version of the game as I understand it. It was totally playable and impressively high res. #VCFwest #retrocomputing
