Just installed a personal AI assistant that runs entirely offline: no internet, no cloud, just me and my machine.

It already gives smart answers about my tech projects 🤯

Next step: adding RAG to ground it on my own documentation.

Proud of me and my mum, who managed to – over the phone, and with her entire computer in French:

- Make a Windows 10 installation USB stick
- Boot her company-provided laptop from the stick
- Go into Command Prompt (her: "this is just like DOS!") and swap `utilman.exe` with a copy of `cmd.exe`
- Disable antimalware ("programmes malveillants") protection temporarily
- Reset the local admin password
- Disable a malfunctioning network adaptor ("carte réseau")

#techjoy We replaced a leaking traditional hot water heater with a Rinnai tankless heater a bit more than 10 years ago. With 3 teenagers, the endless supply of hot water is a double-edged sword since no one ever runs out. We’re on city water with exceptional pressure, and the tankless does a great job. Last year, we started getting some error codes, but I was able to DIY diagnose and replace a failing blower motor, and we’re back in business. #homeimprovement

#techjoy After too many occurrences of teens getting late-night snacks and leaving the fridge in the garage wide-open, rendering tons of food unsafe or spoiled, I made it my mission to have constant temperature monitoring of the fridges and freezers. This is working with a combination of Sonoff Zigbee Temperature/Humidity Sensor, a Hubitat automation hub, and some Twilio connections to send txt messages to my wife and I if something is amiss. #homeautomation #zigbee 1/2

#techjoy We use Nest thermostats for the house. While I’m not a fan of overly connected automation solutions, they do “just work”. About a year back we added a fleet of Nest Temperature Sensors. I wish there was better data export capability, but the built-in features allow us to have the A/C system “follow” any room we wish, and we’ve been able to better balance the system by monitoring temperature trends over time. #homeautomation

#techjoy I got my first 3d printer back in 2015. Now our house has three, technically one belongs to the robotics team I coach (FTC 16461), and 2 belong to my son. The ability start with an idea, sketch it out (I use cad.onshape.com) and then have it materialize later in the day is awesome. My latest “fix” was a couple of clips to hold the solar panel for my motorized blackout shade when the original “just tape it to the window” solution gave out to the heat of the sun. #3dprinting

Since the days of Windows Home Server (I wrote a book back then a.co/d/bSK2hQn) I have been running a server in the home. After WHS met its rapid demise, I moved things over to run on a variety of VMs - Currently I’m running qemu/libvirt/kvm on Ubuntu 22, and have several VMs running. 1/3

I have a thing with double-checking that doors are closed and locked. A couple years back we added a Genie Aladdin Connect unit to our garage door. I also have a manual override that can lockout the door being opened by Aladdin Connect or any remotes. I have notifications when the door is opened or closed, or if it’s left open too long or after hours. Sometimes peace of mind is adjacent to joy.

I have a solar powered blackout shade in my office/bonus room. This room absorbs a lot of heat via the window, so the ability to move the shade to pre-set positions throughout the day makes a big difference. I’m still using the remote, but I hope to automate the schedule sometime.

When we re-did our kitchen our contractor convinced us to include under-cabinet LED lighting. The lighting is great, but what’s even better is that I was able to replace the controller with one that is Zigbee enabled, so we have a schedule to turn the lights on/off, and adjust color temperature and brightness throughout the day. Getting the controller to work on a schedule with Hubitat required some custom code and experimentation.

Sharing some for some less than usual technology in my life that bring me joy. Feel free to ask questions if you want to know more about how I set something up, or share your own

Confusingly (for my audience) this isn't a decentralized exchange, but a Desktop experience that was superior to the one I'd put together. I've played with this thing for the last 20 minutes, and it's the first time I've experienced real #techjoy in ages.
