Contesto: Nel 1797 l’esercito napoleonico occupò la Romagna, trovando una popolazione contadina oppressa dal dominio della Chiesa e dalla miseria. Il dominio francese non portò reali benefici: obblighi militari e requisizioni alimentarono l’ostilità verso il nuovo potere. Nacquero così forme di dissenso e un pensiero anarchico, con diserzioni di massa e la diffusione del brigantaggio nelle zone paludose e montane, fenomeno destinato a crescere fino a fine Ottocento. Le storie dei briganti si tramandarono tra testimonianze dirette e racconti nelle osterie, ispirando questa tavola come omaggio a una terra dura e affascinante.
