The Simca 1000, or Simca Mille in French, is a small, boxy rear-engined four-door saloon, manufactured for 18 years by French automaker Simca, from 1961 to 1978. The origins of the Simca 1000 do not lie in France but in Italy. Simca's President-director general, Henri Pigozzi, had been born in Turin and had known Fiat's founder, Giovanni Agnelli, from 1922 until Agnelli's death in 1945 ...

Today, a car that could perhaps be classed as a rival to yesterday’s Renault Caravelle. This is the Simca Aronde Plein Ciel coupé - note the pillarless design from Facel. The Caravelle was a rear-engined car but the Aronde had a standard front engine/rear drive set up. I saw this one at the Practical Classics resto show at the NEC in March last year.

Just in case anyone feels cheated because I posted motorcycles rather than cars today as part of the current BMW sequence, here’s a bonus #davidsdailycar featuring the Talbot Alpine hatch and Solara saloon (in other markets, these were earlier badged as Simcas). The Festival of the Unexceptional took place on Saturday, and I saw this pair in the car park of the nearby hotel at which I stayed the night before (first pic) and at the show itself (second pic).

I’ve been concentrating quite a bit on British cars lately, so I thought I’d go French for a few days for a bit of variety. Meet the Simca 1100 pick-up - although this example, as one of the last mid-eighties examples, was badged as a Talbot. With the 1100 hatch, Simca basically invented the Golf years before Volkswagen did - but the pick-up has a big claim to fame as well. More tomorrow!
