#PacificAster is one of my fave #NativePlants to use for #rewilding & for attracting more #pollinators.

It's a small, hardy, beautiful purple #NativeWildflower which is found from BC to California. It's tolerant of many different coastal habitats, from ocean sand dunes to rocky outcrops to salt marshes to grasslands to forests. Great plant to use for soil erosion & slopes stabilization work. It has a deep, clumpy, extensive fibrous root system - don't grow beside plants with weaker root systems.

Pacific aster is extremely easy to grow in it's native grow zones, across coastal PNW areas. You'll love their long bloom time, from late May into late October. It provides pollen sources for pollinators in Fall. After they stop blooming, they'll produce fluffy seed heads, full of prolific wind-born #seeds. Snip off tops of seed heads to save them. I store mine in airtight jars & share a lot of them too.

The left side highlights a hand holding a flower with vibrant purple petals and a yellow center, with a red wrist wrap visible below. The right side features a cluster of fluffy, white seed heads and seed pods nestled among green foliage. The background of both sides shows a variety of green and muted foliage suggesting an outdoor setting.

"Seed: collecting and storing
Growing plants from seed is generally straightforward and inexpensive. It is an opportunity to increase the number of plants in your garden for free."

This weekend is the #AudubonSociety #RockyMountainBioBlitz . Yesterday I went #SeedCollecting with #WildlandsRestorationVolunteers so I made lots of observations, but today I am at home. I can't use any of the plants I normally take pictures of, because iNaturalist doesn't want captive and cultivated beings, but you know what I can observe? My weeds! All my weeds! Muahahahah!

Some highlights from the #APCAW conference on #AshTrees and #EmeraldAshBorer

#JohnDaigle mentioned chemical treatment on selected trees combined with biological control releases. May not need to keep using chemical treatments if the bio-control takes hold.

EricTopper: "Pheromones could draw EAB away from places which would fall under the bio-control umbrella."
John replied that it has not been tested, as far as he knows.

John Daigle: "The goal ultimately is to co-exist. Get brown ash to evolve to be more resistant, possibly by cross-breeding with other ash trees. That is being done with Manchurian ash and is having success."

Ella MacDonald: "Brown ash used for Wabanaki basket making. Green ash not as suitable for basket making.
We might breed brown with green ash - green ash might be more resistant to EAB. Possibly white ash with brown? However, there us no federal store of black or brown ash seeds. Seed collecting of those two are important. Folks can collect it themselves, after positively identifying the species."

Seed collecting is an almost magical process. I began with one seed, and now I have a bowlful.

Spent some time collecting seed from our Honesty plants. This is such a satisfying gardening activity! Soundtrack in my head: Honesty... is such a lovely herb...

I got my #Covid #booster!

I scheduled it for today because I was going on a #NativePlant #SeedCollecting on Wednesday and didn't want to risk being too sore, but then the seed collection got cancelled. "Hot, dry weather and winds have been a challenge for Native Seed Collections this season." It might still be rescheduled for later this year.

Today I'm cleaning the seeds for Lance-leaved coreopsis / tickseed (Coreopsis lanceolata). This #NativePlant is yellow and drought tolerant.

I've never collected seeds from this particular plant before; instead I bought them.

Now I know that, generally speaking, if seedheads are brown and dried, the seeds can be harvested. You can collect seeds without being a nursery "professional" and they will grow.

Kinda squished as the 2-yo got to hold the bag to eat some berries out on our walk.
