The Jimi Hendrix Experience – a study of musical expression
🗓️ Start: Tue 31 Mar 2026 3:00 pm
⏳ End: Tue 31 Mar 2026 4:30 pm
Speaker: Professor Milton Mermikides
University of Surrey
Why does some music hit us straight in the gut? Why can a single guitar phrase feel joyful, unsettling, or transcendent?
In this engaging and thought-provoking talk, Professor Milton Mermikides unpacks the hidden mechanics of musical expression, using the revolutionary work of The Jimi Hendrix Experience as his guide. Blending musical analysis with insights from science and psychology, he reveals how structure, sound, and performance combine to shape emotional impact.
From composition and harmony to tone, timing, and improvisation, the talk explores how Hendrix’s music communicates far beyond words. It also examines how subtle performance choices can transform meaning, turning a familiar piece into a powerful emotional event.
This is a talk for anyone curious about music, creativity, and why Hendrix still sounds so alive, urgent, and emotionally charged decades later.

From Brains to Simulations: Understanding Cognition and Disease Through Models
🗓️ Start: Mon 23 Feb 2026 3:00 pm
⏳ End: Mon 23 Feb 2026 4:30 pm
Speaker: Dr Viktor Jirsa
Directeur of the Institut de Neurosciences des Systèmes, Chief Scientific Officer of EBRAINS, and leader of The Virtual Brain initiative
In this talk, Dr Jirsa will explore how scientists are now using computer models to simulate the human brain — helping us better understand how we think, how the brain changes as we age, and what happens when things go wrong.
Drawing on pioneering research from across Europe, he will show how virtual brain models can reveal patterns of brain activity, offer new insights into conditions such as epilepsy and mental illness, and open the door to more personalised approaches to brain health. Along the way, the talk will touch on one of science’s great questions: how the physical brain gives rise to the mind.
This accessible and engaging lecture is ideal for anyone curious about the brain, the future of medicine, and how modern science is helping us understand ourselves.

WATER SUPPLY AND CLIMATE CHANGE
🗓️ Start: Wed 28 Jan 2026 10:00 am
⏳ End: Wed 28 Jan 2026 11:30 am
Global water consumption has risen significantly due to population growth and industrial expansion. Currently, 75% of the global population resides in countries classified as water-insecure, and 50% of the world’s population experiences severe water scarcity for at least one month per year. Furthermore, pollution frequently renders water unsafe for consumption. Climate change is exacerbating water stress through desertification and shifting weather patterns. Parts of the UK are projected to face water shortages by 2050.
What actions are being taken to safeguard water supply against climate change?

The pool guy has just arrived and the 2 cats and I are sitting out on the back deck. I'm just finishing off my breakfast of bacon and eggs (Pi helps with the bacon), and fancy coffee.
The pool guy doesn't know we are here. I feel like a voyeur, but really I'm just too anxious to make a noise and alert him because that feels like it would be awkward!
The Castle Bank Biota: a Middle Ordovician Burgess Shale-type fauna from Wales

⏳ End: Tue 10 Feb 2026 12:00 pm

The site was discovered by Dr Botting and Dr Lucy Muir near Llandrindod Wells during the Covid-19 lockdown. The nature of the rocks has preserved the soft bodied creatures in exquisite detail and Joe and Lucy are working to reconstruct the development of the ecosystem in as much detail as possible.
You can see some of the creatures discovered by Joe in this article on the Museum of Wales’ website. Joe also has a YouTube channel, Life through time, with some videos you may find interesting.
I'm finally starting to feel officially #RETIRED from the workforce👌
As most people, I was always #OnTheMove w/getting to work assignments in the early morning hrs; the main work I did #caregiving ~ involved a lot of local travel thru out the day as well. There were very Long days sometimes ~ waking up at 5-6am & not getting home til 9-10pm. I didn't work continuously, but had a few hrs until the next client.
I can now savor MY #coffee @ home thru out the day, Not #conveniencestore coffee!
🌄😏☕☕🌅
I have been in #Naarm for 3 days now. A night in hospital for biopsies, to see if I have (another) cancer. Had to stay here for 48 hours before heading home in case I needed to get urgent attention (didn’t).
Staying opposite the #VictoriaMarket, part of our old stomping ground. Now lying in my hotel room with a wonderful coffee (I had forgotten how great coffee can be here) and eating a slice of amazing chocolate cake.
Reading ‘all the pretty horses’ by Cormac McCarthy for the second time. I have read every work he ever published except his last two books. I have decided to read all the others again before the last two.
I still can’t believe how brilliant his language is.
Finally, I feel like I have actually #Retired. A new chapter. New adventures.
I feel like my body is sighing.
Tomorrow night I will be home (on nuenone country) for a while, with my love of 46 years. In a while we will move on to parts unknown but still in lutruwita.
sigh…😌

Had a 4pm doctor's consultation today. Getting there and back, I just caught the start of flush, er rush, hour.
Very peoplely and they are all in a hurry. Not recommended.
I don't miss dealing with rush hour. #Retired
Hello there! This is my #introduction. I'm a lifelong resident of the "Triangle Area” in North Carolina and currently reside on a very rural 5 acres northwest of Hillsborough NC with my spouse and animals.
I'm a huge #Americana music fan, I get all my news from #LastWeekTonight, #TheDailyShow, and #JoshJohnson. I'm newly #retired from #highered and trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. Most days you'll find me #hiking the #eno with my #rescuedog - a #miniaussie named Chaos.
