Day 10 #ArtAdventCalendar

I like to take shapes, gestural motifs, and colours from my abstracted paintings and rework them into surface designs. This one is Ruska 2 v2 Blue, as printed on cotton percale in 2023. (I ordered it from CottonBee, and it is available on other fabrics via Spoonflower.)

The species is not only dimorphic with different male and female forms but also the females are polymorphic (that is, they come in different forms) and with mimetic forms (mimicking other species). This one is the Female alcanor form (with the swallow tails).

Another mollusc repeat pattern for #inverteFest! This one is made with my linocut nautilus. Cephalopods, like octopuses and squid, the nautili grow their own shells and are known as ā€œliving fossils,ā€ having survived relatively unchanged for millions of years.

Another mollusc themed repeat pattern in time for #inverteFest for your nature loving Valentine featuring three of my #linocut heart cockles (Corculum cardissa). Perfect for your favourite malachologist, beach comber or shell collector.

Corculum cardissa, the heart cockle, is a species of marine bivalve mollusc in the family Cardiidae found in the Indo-Pacific. If viewed from the side, it looks like a heart. 🧵

In high-density, these grasshoppers can be considered a garden or argricultural pest who eat grain. Their food consumption raises with temperature. On the other hand, grasshoppers are edible and looking to the future, people are starting to think creatively about protein sources with less environmental impact.

In a circle in the centre is text carved to appear hand lettered, printed in black. Arcing upwards reads ā€œOUR FATEā€. Horizontally across the middle reads ā€œIS TIEDā€. Arcing downwards in smaller text reads ā€œTO THAT OF THEā€. Arcing downwards in larger text on the second line reads ā€œINSECTS.ā€ Scattered around the words are fruits, berries and life sized vegetables.

Here’s a simple repeat pattern with the strawberry linocut I made for my print about plants which benefit from insects. I think sometimes simple is best on textiles and I have been thinking about hand printing some strawberry fabric. You can find this one in my minouette Spoonflower
collection too.

I’ve been working on fabric designs based off of my recent water paintings. It’s been all fire and plants up to this point, so water seemed the next logical step.

I've been working on more fabric designs - this group has shapes and colours from my abstracted forest fire paintings. I posted them to Spoonflower (spoonflower.com/profiles/kamin) for individual orders while I wait on getting in a bulk order for my own project. I'm thinking linen. I just want to stare at vibrant colours after all this interminal snow.

Yesterday was all excitement in the afternoon, at least for me. My first bulk order of my Ruska series of fabric designs printed on organic cotton percale arrived from CottonBee! It was a joy to just stare at the full patterns and imagine what projects to use them in.

I hope there will be more orders for others to enjoy too - otherwise I might have a printed fabric hoarding issue.
