The plan to make landlords potentially pay National Insurance on rental income is long overdue. While it’s right that landlords contribute their fair share, average rents in Northern Ireland have soared by 45% in the past decade. This extra cost must not be passed onto tenants who are already struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Tax fairness cannot come at the expense of affordable homes.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have failed our generation. Many of those I know struggle to afford rent despite having good jobs. Others were pushed out of the country, away from their communities, friends and families, in order to be able to obtain a better quality of life in Sydney, Vancouver, or elsewhere in Europe. I always tell people that I am experiencing the ‘Irish Dream’ of living with my parents in my late twenties; just like roughly 2 in 3 people my age (68% of those who are 18-34 years old). Everyone knows that these parties continue to ruin our chances of getting a home, and it’s easy to point out their economic illiteracy (or nefarious incompetence) in housing policy, but it is a much more challenging task to highlight a radical, positive, and tangible alternative vision for a better housing system.

In this editorial, I will attempt to do so; in detailing this, I bring my experience in tenants’ unions in recent years, both as an active member of Living Rent Tenants’ Union in Scotland and as a founding member of CATU (Community Action Tenants’ Union) Waterford, in addition to my personal experience living and renting in various cities and countries throughout Europe. I have extensively researched the various housing models in existence across the world, and one stands out for its complete success in avoiding a Housing Crisis despite existing within an economy built on Western values and facing a

Last week, the Scottish Parliament resumed after October recess.
It was good to discuss climate adaptation with community groups and members of NESCAN, learn about games & gaming from staff & students at Abertay Uni, and more.
I also argued for real #RentControls for private tenants to make homes more affordable.
Here's a snapshot of my week:

I also urged The Scottish Government to retain robust #RentControls and tenants' protections in the Housing Bill, focus on homelessness prevention, and support the Fair Work Charter.

I will continue working with Engender & Close The Gap to strengthen Public Sector Equality Duty obligations.

And, this coming week, in amongst all the events and debates that will be happening in Parliament, I'm looking forward recognising the bicentenary of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service!

I was pleased to pop into Unite the Union's Policy Conference in Dundee today.
I chatted to workers in Unite Hospitality's Fair Hospitality team, about their #FairTips and #GetMeHomeSafely campaigns.
And it was also good to hear discussion about the Housing Bill that @ScottishGreens introduced to the Scottish Parliament: we need robust #RentControls & other tenants' protections!
