Einheit, die Christus meint, ist jene zwischen Gottvater und Gottes Sohn. Die Dreifaltigkeit zeigt den Menschen, wie die Liebe Verschiedenheit zu einem Ganzen verbindet. Es mag ein Grundgedanke für die Ökumene sein, dass jede Kirche und jede Glaubensgemeinschaft noch das Licht des Ganzen in sich trägt und dass nur in der Einheit das Ganze wieder in voller Kraft nach Gottes Willen erstrahlen kann.
Für die katholische Kirche ist der Verlust der Einheit ein Leid, das sie ertragen muss, aber nicht hinnehmen. Für die reformatorischen Glaubensgemeinschaften darf der Verlust der Einheit nicht zum Selbstzweck werden, der unter allen Umständen verteidigt werden muss.

Die Landesfürsten benützten die #Reformation für ihre machtpolitischen Interessen, so kam es 1618 zum 30-jährigen Krieg. Die Konfessionsfrage rückte bald in den Hintergrund, bis nur mehr konstitutionelle Erwägungen ausschlaggebend wurden. 2 Jahre nach Kriegsbeginn trat eine allgemeine Kriegsmüdigkeit ein, die zu Friedensverhandlungen führten. Ab 1621, als die böhmischen separatistischen Bestrebungen vereitelt wurden, hätte der Krieg beendet sein können.
Nun verhinderten die Großmächte Frankreich, Habsburg und Schweden den Frieden. Sie erhoben den Anspruch einer europäischen Universalmonarchie. Ab dem Kriegseintritt Frankreichs 1635 kann von keinem #Religionskrieg mehr gesprochen werden. Im Westfälischen Frieden (1648) wurden territoriale Einfluss- und Interessensphären geregelt, Herrschaftsansprüche, Autonomie und Souveränität. Von Religion ist nur am Rande die Rede, aber es wird der Grundstein für ein modernes Völkerrecht gelegt.

In der #Reformation verbanden protestantische Landesfürsten Religion mit ihrem machtpolitischen Streben, um staatliche Unabhängigkeit und Souveränität von der kaiserlichen Zentralgewalt zu erlangen. Diese Nähe zu politischen oder staatlichen Zielen besteht im #Protestantismus bis heute. Neben den Willen nach territorialen Verschiebungen sollte auch die Standeskompetenz in der Verwaltungsorganisation und im Bildungswesen ausgebaut werden.
Zur Durchsetzung ihrer Forderungen gründeten protestantische Stände deshalb 1608 die Union. 1609 antworteten die katholischen Stände mit der Gründung ihrer Liga unter Führung Maximilians von Bayern. Die Liga hatte als Ziel den Landfrieden und die vielerorts schon enteignete und angegriffene Katholische Kirche im Reich zu verteidigen. Dies war die Ausgangssituation zum 30-jährigen Krieg.

Durch die #Reformation entstanden in Deutschland und Europa konfessionelle Spannungen. Sie führten zu brutaler Gewalt, zum Dreißigjährigen Krieg. In diesem Religionskrieg wird deutlich wie Religion, Konfession und Glaube machtpolitisch verzweckt wurden. Doch damals wie heute ist die Religion oft nur scheinbar ursächlich, stattdessen wirken andere Faktoren: ethische Zugehörigkeit, wirtschaftliche Unterschiede, weltliche machtpolitische Interessen. Religion überlagert diese eigentlichen Gründe ohne konfliktverschärfend aufzutreten.
Der europäische Machtkonflikt im 17. Jahrhundert war somit eher ein Konstitutionskrieg. Für die katholische Kirche gilt stets: Krieg darf nach dem Willen Gottes nicht sein. Allerdings ist Krieg nichts Böses an sich, es gibt Fälle in denen militärische Mittel zulässig sein können. So bei Notwehr und Nothilfe. Dabei muss nicht nur der Zweck gerecht sein, sondern auch die Mittel.

Eine jüngere geschichtswissenschaftliche Forschung verwirft inzwischen die These von Max Weber, dass es eine exklusive Beziehung zwischen #Reformation und der Moderne gibt. Eine in der Geschichte fortschrittsfeindliche und Kultur unterdrückende katholische Kirche wird als Legende vorwiegend protestantischer Historiker des 19. Jahrhunderts beschrieben. Jedoch verkennt der Katholizismus keineswegs die tatsächlichen Fortschritte durch den #Protestantismus, etwa bei der Hermeneutik der Bibel oder der Vertiefung des persönlichen Zugangs in der Gottesbeziehung.
Unabhängig von der Konfession hat jedoch das #Christentum den Individualismus und die Freiheit als Grundlage der Moderne und ihre Sicht auf die #Menschenwürde befördert. Das christliche Menschenbild hat zu jener christlichen Ethik und Moral geführt, auf die sich heute Menschenrechtskonventionen und demokratische Verfassungen berufen.

Bei der #Hexenverfolgung wirkte sich die Verkürzung des protestantischen Menschenbilds verheerend auf Kriminalisierung und Verfolgung von „Hexen“ in Nord- und Mitteleuropa aus. Die reformatorische Prädestinationslehre wurde zudem zur Wiege des Kapitalismus. Das Auserwähltsein für das Himmelreich zeigt sich dort im irdischen Erfolg und Wohlstand, Gnade wurde monetär objektiviert, ein „Wohlstandsevangelium“ wird gepredigt: das Folgen der Gebote Gottes bringt wirtschaftlichem Erfolg.
Die #Reformation nahm auch der Kunst ihre Freiheit, die seit dem Mittelalter die katholische Kirche erfand. Es kam zum Bildersturm, die Kunst der Kirche war oft nicht prüde genug. Christus durfte z.B. in seiner ganzen Menschlichkeit dargestellt werden: nackt, blutend, leidend, die Reformation fand dies anstößig und schockierend. Großartige Kirchenbauten und Kunstwerke, zur Herrlichkeit Gottes gebaut, waren nun verpönt, eine Verschwendung.

Bis heute ist die Verbindung von #Protestantismus zu Staat/Regierung intensiver als im Katholizismus. Ein Katholik orientiert sich immer noch weit mehr hin nach Rom, als etwa in D nach Berlin.
In der #Reformation zeigte sich auch, dass das Neue nicht sofort das Bessere ist, was auch für religiöse Lehren gilt. Neue Konfessionen bringen nicht zugleich Fortschritt, es ereignen sich oft erhebliche Rückschritte. Theologisch wurde etwa eine Differenz zwischen Christus und seiner Kirche aufgerissen, für die katholische Glaubenslehre etwas völlig fremdes. Ekklesiologisch ist die nicht überwundene Spaltung der als Einheit gestifteten Kirche ein großer Rückschritt. Die fortwährende Abtrennung weiterer Glaubensgemeinschaften innerhalb der Reformation setzt diese einmal verlorene Einheit in ihr weiter fort. Ein weiterer Rückschritt fand in philosophischer Hinsicht statt, insbesondere in der Naturrechtslehre.

#Luther hatte mit der Reformation nicht die Absicht z.B. das Petrusamt abzuschaffen, er sorgt sich um dessen Reputation. Viele seiner Thesen, u.a. über den Ablasshandel, kann heute ein Katholik guten Gewissens zustimmen, das Konzil von Trient hatte die angeprangerten Mißstände in der Kirche beseitigt. Die Reformation hat aus Sicht der Kirche ihre Aufgabe erfüllt und wurde gewürdigt.
Aber sie entwickelte sich inzwischen zu einer politischen, sozialen Revolutionsbewegung und so wuchs die Differenz zur Kirche, Protestantismus wurde zum Prinzip. Luther nahm diese Entwicklung mit Bestürzung zur Kenntnis, konnte aber die zunehmende Politisierung seiner Thesen nicht aufhalten. So förderten einige Landesherrn die #Reformation, weil machtpolitische Interessen, die Stärkung der Territorialfürsten gegenüber dem Kaiser, sie dazu bewegte. Auch gelang den Fürsten so der Zugriff auf Glaube und Kirche, machten beides zu weltlichen Möglichkeiten.
