It’s never wise to visit Hamburg in January.

My first experience was twelve years ago, where my beard froze the moment I stepped out of the S-Bahn. The gig I was travelling to then was unfortunately cut short (eternal respect to the late Jill Janus), but availing myself of the delights of the Reeperbahn and local company soon warmed my spirits until dawn.

It was local company again which drew me over last weekend. An invite to another gig, with promise of crash space to ease the cold. However, none of us could have predicted the severe snow flurries hitting the region just before my flight – the worst weather for over fifteen years.

Suddenly stranded at short notice with my friend snowed under, I had to plan a new itinerary. Landing late, a last-minute hotel booking near the airport was essential, necessitating a short bus journey and long trudge through calf-deep snow to shelter. Thankfully I had the prescience to travel in my mountain thermals, which stayed on for most of the weekend, but that first night bore a soul-searching chill all its own.

Things felt a lot better once I returned to the Reeperbahn the next morning, and the familiarity of debaucherous adventures soon inspired me to carry on, even if the infamous Der Clochard bar is no more. With my second hotel a mere bottle’s throw from the venue, a casino-styled room once likely booked by the hour, I had time to wander around even if I couldn’t make it too far.

More than sailor-themed sleaze, I was taken back by how the area around St. Pauli was filled with families. Children eagerly dragging their sleds to make the most of slippery slopes, and the occasional surprise snowperson nestled in unexpected places. By the evening, my friend was able to drive over (with other lovely friends in tow) and great conversations and hair-swinging were had until the early hours.

Although the locals I spoke with lamented the loss of our culture since my first visit, the Reeperbahn still retains a sense of welcoming whimsy. I do so dearly love spending time here, whatever the weather!

With temperatures dropping below minus-ten Celsius by Sunday morning, I was surprised how cosy things felt. I’ve had many wonderful, memorable trips to Hamburg, of which (on aggregate) I can count this another.

Saying goodbye to another local friend at the airport, I settled in for a straightforward flight home. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Stranded on the tarmac with a frozen engine for four hours, we were disembarked while a specialist was flown in from Switzerland to coax the blades into motion.

Finally setting off over eight hours later than scheduled and getting home well after midnight, my Monday was relegated to reflection and recovery.

But even with the worst of weather, I would definitely, absolutely do it again!

Fun market, but the noise and flashing lights were a bit too much for me.
