My comment:
Ranked Choice Voting should be adopted. It provides the mechanism to allow a true majority to elect our leaders. Run-off elections are expensive, time consuming and significantly under represent the voting public.
Rarely do we find something that is definitively better at it's purpose that's also simpler and cheaper. And when the conditions aren't met, i.e. just two candidates, functions like the status quo.
Everyone has done ranked choice voting in their lives. "If they have a chicken salad get that, but if not get me a burger".
On top of all that, it encourages candidates to reach outside of their party or base. Being 70% of the voters 2nd choice easily wins a closely divided election.
And even better, gives independent candidates a real shot at winning allowing voters to reject both major parties.
RCV is really a win win win scenario. It makes a majority of people have voted for the winner, without the cost and negative properties of run-off elections. We need the public to be invested in it's elected leadership, and the current two party (in all but name) oligarchy system is falling apart.

Serious Q for #legal #law #elections experts. Many yrs ago when #StPaul first implemented #RankedChoiceVoting I volunteered for FairVote and stood outside a polling place to answer questions and hear concerns. I was told that since I was "political", I had to be some regulated distance from the poll (50 yds? can't remember).
So when #Bannon says #ICE will surround the polls, won't they be subject to the same regulation. They can make a wider perimeter but local LE can create a corridor.

We aren't going to have elections run by the U.S. government, and the fact that Trump wants them is all you need to know about why. What we CAN use, however, is minimum federal standards for elections, implemented as soon as the fascists are dislodged.
Elections at every level should use Ranked Choice voting, so every winner has actual majority support from voters.
And when we have ranked choice, there's no reason not to give minor parties equal ballot access.

With #RankedChoiceVoting, candidates for political office are incentivized to collaborate across campaigns.
When politicians compete for voters' second/third choice votes, they're much more civil with each other, lowering the temp of our politics.
