As always, the predictions for #journalism from the @niemanlab were very interesting, and as always, I am most interested in how impact is conceived here in a complex #society: Time to acknowledge that #Pulitzer ("Get these things out in the open [...] and sooner or later public opinion will sweep them away.") is dead. Hopefully early enough to ask, what to do instead.
Paul Cheung gives 4 concrete hints: niemanlab.org/2025/12/journali.
Anyone up for discussing these strategies?

"Maus" by Art Spiegelman masterfully combines personal Holocaust testimony with striking visual storytelling, setting a benchmark for graphic novels worldwide. Essential reading for anyone interested in history and human resilience.

Today in Labor History October 9, 1936: A lettuce strike had recently ended in Salinas, California. However, when red flags went up throughout town, the authorities feared communist agitators had returned and removed the red flags, only to find out later that they were part of a traffic check being done by the state highway division.

The first effective organizing in the Salinas Valley began in 1933, with the mostly female lettuce trimmers demanding equal pay to the men. The Filipino field workers supported the women’s demands. In 1934, members of the Filipino Labor Union (FLU) struck the lettuce farms. So, the farmers brought in Mexican and Anglo scabs. They used vigilante mobs and the cops to violently attack the strikers and arrested their leaders. When the Filipino Labor Union and the Mexican Labor Union joined forces, a mob of vigilantes burned their labor camp down and drove 800 Filipinos out of the Salinas Valley at gunpoint. The 1934 strike ended soon after, with the growers recognizing the FLU and offering a small raise. This violence inspired John Steinbeck to write “In Dubious Battle” and “Grapes of Wrath,” for which he won both Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes.

Fascinating history of the newspaper's 140 years. The paper led a successful crusade against a burgeoning KKK in the early 20th century. It brought the Fed too!

The Dallas Morning News turns 140! 📰

Texas’ oldest business publishes 51,135th consecutive edition.

"The Morning News celebrates 140 years. Count this as another victory for print. If you haven’t yet seen it, the physical version of the paper today does something that can’t be replicated online. To celebrate their anniversary, the folks at the News published a wraparound front page with a huge, beautiful illustration created by Michael Hogue. On the inside, they printed a replica of their very first all-text front page, from 1885. A story with a dateline from Baird, Texas, caught my eye: “AN ATTEMPTED OUTRAGE. Bold Assault of a Tramp on a Hotel Chambermaid at Baird—He is Followed Westward, Captured and Jailed. Quite an excitement was created here last night by the entrance of a tramp, who gave his name as Af. Wilson, into the apartments of one of the chambermaids at the Commercial Hotel and attempting to outrage her. The tramp came here Wednesday and was employed as dishwasher at the hotel. He entered the room in bare feet, carrying a large butcher knife in his hand. He approached the bed of the maid and arousing her, said: ‘If you make any noise I will kill you.'” There’s more. If you’re a design and/or journalism geek, this is one worth getting your hands on."
