So, in a discussion on a Lemmy instance¹ someone asked about specialty covers on notebooks instead of reusable notebook covers and why people didn't make the latter anymore. Curious about this (I was never really a user of notebook covers because the ones I saw were always cheap plastic garbage with twee Japanimation covers or the like), I went digging around on Taobao to see if there were more adult variations on this and found … well at first I didn't find many. It turns out I just didn't have the right words. Upon learning the correct vocabulary, I found plenty (a listing attached as an example).

I also ordered one, plus a horribly cheap notebook core, to test them out and see how they solve the notebook size issue. I've got another, larger (350-page!) notebook coming, as well as another cover, so there will be another photo-essay on the topic in the near future.

The outside face of the book cover plus the horribly cheap notebook core I picked up for the test. (Ignore the red stamps. That was me using the notebook for playing with my signature chops.)

The book cover is a nice soft cotton with an almost furry feel illustrated in the style of an ancient Chinese landscape. In the dark blue skies overhead a pair of dragons can be seen watching over the land. The edges are nicely sewn and the cover is a quality product with the outside cover sewn together with very good stitching, double-stitched wherever it is needed for strength (the folded-back pouch and the retaining loop).

The notebook itself uses really bad, cheap cardboard as the cover, and is bound very unevenly with white tape. It is not pretty (nor is it meant to be) since it is a notebook core, sold typically to producers of notebooks to attach their own covers to.This is the inside face of the book. On the left is the folded-in, sewn-down pocket that holds the leftmost cover of the book. The rest is the interior off-white lining that extends well past where the book reaches when opened and has a loop of cloth sewn located about where the midpoint of a typical A5 notebook's back cover would be. That loop is the secret sauce that makes this a versatile book cover.

The notebook is opened here revealing the lay-flat, sewn binding. It's not great quality, but acceptable, especially for a 100-page, sewn notebook core sold for about a buck. The notebook's front cover is slipped into the leftmost pouch. There's plenty of slack space present to account for things like notebooks with hardcovers that are slightly larger than A5 in size. (That test is coming up and will also be a photo essay.)And here's where the secret sauce for flexible sizing shows. The right cover is slipped inside a cloth loop, then the excess is folded back in and under the loop, retaining the notebook securely. As you can see, I could wrap a slightly thinner notebook (eyeballing this, likely as little as a 40-pager) with that tail going all the way in to the binding, and I could probably wrap a far larger book as well given how much slack there is beyond the loop before the fold-over narrows. (I'll be testing a 350-page notebook with a hard cover next.)
