The Luddites didn't even go full Luddite. They felt they had not exhausted political action, then were summarily executed and/or sent to slave colonies. They mailed letters, did public demonstrations, signed petitions, and for their efforts they were beset by bullshitters accusing them of "military-like drills," among other obvious fabrications. They wrecked machinery, then got blamed for death threats. They were blamed for the Pentrich uprising, which itself was caused by the unbearable exploitation of the working class, and not by the working class who justifiably marched on Nottingham. But nobody there was flying some imagined flag of Ned Ludd!

I wasn't there when it went down, but I call it like I see it. A city nearby to me had a lady last week who marched up to city council during a public hearing and held up a petition at them, which they'd been ignoring for months because 19,000 people wanted to revoke the city's permit that they granted to ICE to hole up in there. They freaking swarmed her with cops, and the news dutifully reported that in the wake of this vicious attack, city council members were going to have to start carrying firearms to defend themselves. She's been charged with criminal trespassing. In a public hearing, at city hall. People in power lie like that ALL the TIME. Not even a lot of power. Any "representative" of anyone anywhere in the USA is going to lie that protected, civil acts are dangerous violence that must be stopped with more violence. I can't imagine the UK is much better.

Until someone shows me the "death threats and possibly attacked" magistrates, I'm going to assume the magistrates were lying. Even when they were (supposedly) flying Ned's flag, I'm not holding a single one Luddite to any extremist lens, until I read some record other than that of the total slimeball Samuel Bamford, claiming the protestors opened fire unprovoked, because when the mill owners fired on them, that was just "to intimidate" and shouldn't have been seen as uh... shooting them.

I mean um... going "full Luddite" as you put it is probably a bad idea, since they start murdering people long before that point. So I agree. Just... don't expect them to play by any rule other than "kill people until they stop nattering at me."

Because I don't have a huge to-do list today of course I'm reading about the origins of yaoi and yuri (more or less #WLW and #MLM in #anime, I think?). After not-very-much reading, I'm having this speculative thought:

It seems like, at least in anime, many of the earliest publicly-available MLM and WLW stories were marketed as lurid pulp, maybe analogous to England's "penny dreadfuls". This seems like it might have been because queer narratives were not welcome in mainstream media, so the only ones that got through to broad audiences were the queer stories published in horror or kink outlets, where relationships were depicted as abusive, ending in tragedy, or bundled with socially unacceptable behavior (e.g., lesbian couple who are mob hitwomen).

If the above was a thing (and that's a big If; I'm not deeply knowledgeable about this), then perhaps an entire generation or two of queer kids (and adults) found their sexuality mostly represented in very fucked-up contexts and with deeply fucked-up relationship dynamics. This would probably have an impact on relationship patterns in queer communities for quite a while.

As an attempted analogy: I'm imagining straight people in the USA never being taught about sex or attraction--the messages were only about shame and sin and straight people were shamed for expressing any romantic or sexual feelings. Then, from the 1950s to the 1970s, stories featuring romance and sex appeared in magazines that a person could actually buy. Of course all the sex- and relationship- and norms-starved straight people ate those stories up, but the only stories involving straight sex or romance available for 20-30 years were written by David Lynch and Anne Rice.

I wonder what my thoughts, feelings, prototypes, and expectations about #relationships and #sex would look like if all my formative sexual and romantic #media exposure (in a near absence of any other kind) was from Eraserhead and Queen of the Damned? What would my romantic/sexual self look like?

sometimes i joke that the entire world is being double-handedly held together by california and the eu because usually when i hear about an actually good law getting passed it's one of those two, but i think it might not be that they do good stuff but just that they do actual stuff in general.

for example i hear from some people that the reason mozilla changed their tos is because of a poorly worded california law with an extremely broad definition of "selling" user data. which if true is definitely a relief i think. it would be horrible if there was literally only one trustworthy modern browser base and that browser base wasn't even finished yet.

that's an attempt at something good but it's a botched one. which is something that happens sometimes when you do stuff.

anyway thanks for the clean air, california.

The last time I went to pride (2 years ago) people were saying .. More flags.

More flags seems like more borders to me.
