CA Gov Newsom's loan of state highway patrol officers to understaffed #Oakland last yr resulted in confiscation of 139 #firearms, and over 1400 arrests. To continue the cooperation, Gov has reached out to #OPD and city officials demanding the city change it's strict vehicular pursuit policy that he believes is hindering #LawEnforcement and making the city a magnet for criminal conduct.
Over the past year, #CHP patrol cars conducted almost 2 chases a day of suspects while Oakland's own larger #Police presence, participated in little over 1 a wk.
City officials follow the restraints of their decade old "no pursuit" #policy that was adopted to create trust with “low income and people of color”, and has reduced dangerous hi-speed chases that resulted in tragic and expensive civilian injury incidents, and chases that ultimately had little impact on conviction rates or total crimes committed.
As #PolicePursuits and associated arrests in Oakland decreased significantly, critics say the corresponding large jump in citywide #CrimeRate has created a perfect climate for lawbreakers to run wild.
Meanwhile a city with an ever increasing number of closed corporate HQs, empty commercial storefronts, stadiums & hotels, finds out the resulting falling tax ba$e from stagnant #PropertyValues that then further thin out public school budgets and other public services all tell the tortuous tale.
