Yeah so it turns out you can't beat the game. I tried twice and the game glitches and crashes as soon as Lance admits defeat during the battle. My ideas for workarounds would be either dumping the save and beating it on a legit copy or using walk through wall cheats. The problem is that both of these workarounds aren't going to mesh well with the fact that it's a multicart.

I might try a third time and beat him with a different Pokemon or try something different but for now it looks like I'm not going to be able to see Guangdong which is a shame.

So I keep running into this issue. Fire type attacks always critical hit on Water types. I don't know if it was intentional (a weird thing to be intentional). I honestly can't tell if this is just some horrifically misleading "translation" at this point. This is going to be the last time I point this out though.
