Foregrounding the perspectives of oppressed groups is necessary in order for people who are blind to their privilege to learn that what life is like for them, is not so for everyone.
For able bodied white cis het-passing folks, this is a long journey.
For a society, the process is slow. It is open to weaponisation by those who want to retain the status quo.
The strategy? Blame on a chosen ‘other’ group the harms that come from exploitation, increasing inequality & environmental destruction. As the tools that enable misinformation become increasingly effective it is harder & harder not to be sucked into polarisation & hate.
The means of our liberation - learning to see through the eyes of others - are weaponised against us.
But …… people are not our enemy. Ignorance is.
‘Breaking people into identity groups and having them fight each other has always played into the hands of the powerful because it undermines the more material bonds of class that unite us’.
Let’s not comply.

It is vile what girls (children!) & women are exposed to on social media. Those who name what they see & say #ForkThat are the role models here.
We set such a low bar for boys & men. ‘At least he doesn’t …(insert atrocity here)‘. Flooding the space with abuse is how the parameters of normal are moved. The bar is getting lower.
The attitudes expressed by these gullible boys come straight from #EvangelicalPurityCulture. They connect indivisibly with #WhiteSupremacist politics, & together they serve the interests of those who wish to generate clickbait distraction as cover for accelerating plunder.
Those who employ this strategy deny the reality of climate change while closing borders & hoarding resources against what they know to be its inevitable effects. They amass ever more obscene profits while workers are exploited, inequality grows, safe homes become fewer, safety nets are dismantled, environments are destroyed, wars proliferate, populations are displaced & the planet burns. When their actions hurt us we are invited to blame each other, especially those more vulnerable than ourselves.
The tools available to entangle us in distraction & cultivate hate are becoming exponentially more sophisticated. It’s increasingly hard not to get sucked in.
The fundamental strategy is to convince us to see certain others as less than human. When we see these thoughts arise in ourselves they’re our cue. Wake up! We are being scammed.
Meanwhile, being female in public means living in a shitstorm. White women like me get to know for ourselves what people of colour & those who are indigenous, disabled, queer or Muslim have known forever. Power is always seen more clearly from below.
You’re being had, boys. It’s not women who have turned you into obedient puppets. It’s white supremacist patriarchal ideology exploited by oligarchs in the interests of their short term profit.
Ignorance is the enemy. We are each other’s hope.

Histories we need to learn in school.
I had never heard of Pearl Gibbs. Interesting that she was supported by the Sydney Theosphical Society in 1941.
I was raised with the non-racist tenets of the TS. During my childhood in the 50s & 60s not being racist meant ‘black folk are people just like us’ - it befriended nice indigenous families who were living like white folks, & had no acknowledgement of histories of colonisation & displacement, or of culture. The TS differed in recognising & valuing some aspects of cultures other than Anglo & European. It did this in the manner that defines for me now what ‘whiteness’ is - an entitlement to define what they see, from their unacknowledged position as colonisers, as the whole truth, & to appropriate any aspect of the culture they are looking at to enrich their own lives & understanding, along with their narrative of benevolent superiority. As I grew up I thought of this as a practice of ‘valuing diversity’ that extended easily into welcoming other kinds of difference, & it is what I liked about the culture I grew up in. I see now that from other perspectives this looks like same old same old, white entitlement to appropriate.
Taking off the white colonial blinkers is taking generations of baby steps.
Thank you to every one of these pioneers. Sovereignty was never ceded.

Imagine how different our world would be if JM Keynes’ model of an independent default global currency had been adopted instead of the American proposal which has cemented US hegemony ever since.
Where currently the US dollar is the currency against which all others are valued, with penalties for inequality being borne by the poor - thereby placing no checks on accelerating plunder by US interests that drives other countries into poverty & collapse - Keynes’ model requires countries running trade surpluses to balance their trade by buying from countries that run deficits.
Imagine.
For all his shortcomings I have a lot of time for JMKeynes. It was his advice that led to the establishment of the post-war welfare state in Britain. Reading his work 50 years ago was the first time I realised that ALL economic models, including his, were predicated on the idea of infinite growth.
The interconnected nature of global ecosystems was not as clear to folks then as it is now. But Keynes’ clarity about the potential for unimpeded plunder, with catastrophic consequences globally, was spot on.
