Restaurante vacío expone desperdicio de alimentos

La campaña que convirtió un restaurante ficticio en una plataforma real de impacto social.

Lo que parecía la apertura de un nuevo restaurante de alta cocina en Lima terminó siendo, en realidad, una acción creativa diseñada para visibilizar una problemática urgente pero poco visible: el desperdicio innecesario de alimentos de calidad en el país, y la falta de recursos logísticos para trasladar alimentos de los mercados que no fueron vendidos hacia quienes más los necesitan.

En el Perú, más de 12 millones de toneladas de alimentos no logran comercializarse cada año. Para dimensionar esta cifra, equivale a 140 estadios nacionales llenos de comida que no llegan a millones de personas en situación de vulnerabilidad, pese a que muchos de estos alimentos son en buen estado y hay voluntad de donación.

En ese contexto, Sarah Laughton, Representante en Perú del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), señaló: “Una tragedia del desperdicio de alimentos es que tienden a ser alimentos frescos de alto valor nutritivo los que terminan siendo desperdiciados. Son los mismos alimentos que muchas familias necesitan y no se pueden permitir, por falta de recursos para comprarlos”. Sarah añadió, “El transporte es un gran cuello de botella. Necesitamos nuevas formas de involucrar a la sociedad y demostrar que actuar está al alcance de todos”. –sn–

The Global Social Progress Index provides a measure for standards of social welfare across the globe. For 2025, Peru was ranked at 82nd out of 171 countries. While it has notched up two places since the 2024 ranking, it remains well below where it stood (66) in 2018, before the pandemic. Peru scores particularly low on meeting basic needs (101 in the ranking), citizen security (129) and housing (95).
