@TheDoctor512 leider nix neues.

@TheDoctor512 leider nix neues.
Today I learned that police can use GM's OnStar to remotely control a vehicle they are tracking.
From the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) report on shooting a man chased in a 2 day manhunt in Temagami in Oct 2025: "OPP communications coordinated with OnStar to track a pick-up truck, receiving intermittent GPS updates indicating the vehicle was moving and later stationary near Highway 11. OPP crews attended and set up a containment site at Roosevelt Road and Highway 11. The Complainant’s vehicle was sighted approaching the containment and then reversing away. Authorization was provided to OnStar to initiate a gradual slowdown of his vehicle."
The SIU report (case #25-PFI-401):

Many articles online about how US CBP/ICE and FBI have been making use of this.

#FTC bans #GM from selling drivers' #location data for five years
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has finalized an order with #GeneralMotors and its subsidiary, #OnStar, settling charges that they collected and sold the location and driving data of millions of drivers without consent.

"The best way to ensure that would be through a comprehensive consumer data privacy legislation with strong data minimization rules and requirements for clear, opt-in consent. "No.

"The Federal Trade Commission announced a proposed settlement agreeing that General Motors and its subsidiary, OnStar, will be banned from selling geolocation and driver behavior data to credit agencies for five years. That’s good news for G.M. owners. Every car owner and driver deserves to be protected.
Last year, a New York Times investigation highlighted how G.M. was sharing information with insurance companies without clear knowledge from the driver. This resulted in people’s insurance premiums increasing, sometimes without them realizing why that was happening. This data sharing problem was common amongst many carmakers, not just G.M., but figuring out what your car was sharing was often a Sisyphean task, somehow managing to be more complicated than trying to learn similar details about apps or websites."

@funnymonkey this isn't new.
All modern cars have that feature.
#Texas AG sues #GM for fraud, selling #OnStar customer data to insurers using it to screw drivers. The AG's filing includes receipts. Asks judge to award $10k per violation, plus $250K for 65+ y/o seniors. (billions) It's having them turn it off, and stop the abuse that will hurt GM the most.
#Austin's #Tesla next, please.
Kudos to AG consumer protection attorneys Bridegan, Nordstrom, Lee, and Baasch for protecting #privacy.
"I called our dealership, a franchise of General Motors, & talked to the salesman who had sold us the car. He confirmed that he had enrolled us for #OnStar, noting that his pay is docked if he fails to do so." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/23/technology/general-motors-spying-driver-data-consent.html

Wow, canceling #onstar is an odyssey. First you have to call, no easy online option, because...easy. Second you have to go through the whole phone menu, verify with a person, have them transfer you to a specialist, then transfer you to an agent who spends 10+ minutes trying to convince you what a terrible idea it is.
Don't you want all these things (I don't want). No
We have a special discount - I can give you $10 off per month. No
I can give you a special wifi rate. No
Now saving $400/yr 👍
@gregly @analogfusion We definitely let that #OnStar / #SiriusXM #security and convenience package expire ASAP. Didn't want it in the first place.
If I could, I'd find the vehicle's SIM card and remove it. There is absolutely no reason why my #vehicle needs to be hoovering up who knows what information and giving literally anyone access to stalk me or my kids, or steal our #car.
#Stellantis builds a fine vehicle, but I don't trust it one bit as a #cybersecurity operation.
