Education Committee meeting today. The genAI madness is in full swing, at least in my neck of the higher-education woods.

Example: MSc dissertations. A three-months project of supervised applied research. Students now are encouraged to use LLM tools to develop and design their project. It used to be the role of the supervisor to help the student develop their project and learn how to do things themselves, in a series of personal meetings, human teacher and human student in creative dialogue, a precious culmination of a Master's degree. Under the new rules, as supervisor I won't even be allowed to insist that the student works with me, without AI.

Since you ask: yes, I did speak up against it. A few other colleagues did so too. Most were pro-AI, feeling hip.

The world we live in! A once noble profession giving up on its own core role, mindlessly. Self-mutilation of the university teacher as a profession.

Are there any good #FOSS alternatives to #Mozilla #Thunderbird with #NoAI ? When I was at the University of Denver I installed Thunderbird once so I could have a local copy of my work emails (through Microsoft), then I deleted it. I've now tried the same trick at CU Boulder (also Microsoft) and been told I need to request access to use Thunderbird. This still might work to back up my emails, but lately I've been thinking it would be nice to have an application instead of using a web client so I get local backups automatically and have a clearner interface. Is there anything good in this space that hasn't been subject to #enshittification ?

J'ai déployé les nouvelles règles #Firefox dans mon lycée :
- nouveau moteur de recherche par défaut : murena.qwant.com (#noAI)
- 3 marques pages dans la barre personnelle dont @cartes_app
- 2 extensions dont 'alerte sites genAI' de @nextinpact
- suppression des 'trucs' AI
- simplification de la page d'accueil
Et d'autres petites choses...

C'est très simple, il faut déposer le fichier policies.json dans /etc/firefox/policies/ et je ne sais plus où sur Win.
