#electronicmusic #computermusic #hci #NIME anyone using external touchscreen monitors as a control surface - looking for recommendations for something robust for gigging and that also is good as a drawing surface for #inkscape - small enough to put a pair in ryainair handluggage so something like 18" is 4k worth double?

TIL that Jerusalem artichokes and artichokes are not the same.

I did make a recipe with artichokes instead of Jerusalem artichokes. (The artichoke and potato hash.) Still tasted nice, but it wasn't the right recipe.

Unfortunately, quite a few recipes in the NiMe cookbook want Jerusalem artichokes, and these seem to be rare around here.

"Would you like French fries with that?"

"Yes."

[Later]

"Waiter! There's a problem with my order."

"Oh?"

"These fries are not French."

"What makes you say that?"

"They speak Spanish!"

I've made three recipes from the NiME cookbook:

Rice Pudding (twice)
Breakfast Hash (it is cooking right now)
Artichoke and Bean Salad

I made the rice pudding for breakfast, but the other too for supper. I don't give a flying fuck that they are supposed to be lunch.

Oh and I always double the quantities. I'm still autistic, and I like to make batches that last.

I don't like rice pudding, as a rule. It's a texture thing. But trying this one as it actually sounds good. Brown rice pudding.

You can download the cookbook for free, or just read it on this website:

Screenshot of the start of a recipe. The words "Rice Pudding" and "Serves two" can be seen. There is a large image of the finished dish in the centre. Browner and more fruity than many rice puddings.

I went to the grocery store twice this weekend.

"OMG! Are you ill?"

No, I wanted to try recipes from the cookbook I mentioned above. I'm going to try the Rice Pudding and the Artichoke and Beans recipes. The Artichoke and Beans one is especially easy: combine ingredients, eat!

I've watched the latest Ann Reardon video on probiotics. I learned a few things.

In the video, they mention "Non-industrialized Microbiome restore" diet (NiMe diet). There's a document with recipes that I'm linking to below.

Next week is NIME week! Not going this year – Canberra is way too far from Berlin – but I finally uploaded my presentation from last year. Features the Sophtar and a somewhat pretentious digression about magic, ergodynamics, and a quote from a book by Benjamin Labatut youtube.com/watch?v=bcftQWdpFw0 federicovisi.com/sophtar-prese

I'm happy to be (online) presenting a paper at #NIME next week! I'll be talking about the Memory Cloud instrument, specifically diving into how it was used by two professional musicians. I use it as an example of what I call "Radically Microscale Design", drawing on sustainable HCI, constraints-based design, and how affordances can be built between players, instruments, and sonic content.
(edit: paper link is live! go read and download and cite! nime.org/proc/nime2025_65/inde)

Screenshot from the NIME 2025 website showing details of my session and a picture of the Memory Cloud instrument, featuring a user etched wood panel with a number of knobs. Title of the session is The Memory Cloud: Personal media libraries as affordance and constraint Abstract: The Memory Cloud is a musical instrument that uses a player’s own library of personal recordings as sonic material. This paper presents the design of the instrument, situating it within sustainability HCI studies and constraints-based design, before describing the instrument being used by two musicians in a professional context. Over 2000 sounds from the musician’s personal cloud library, dating back over 10 years, were placed in the instrument as the only sonic material... (the screenshot does not show the full abstract)

Last week, I went to Utrecht for the NIME conference, where I had the opportunity to present some of my research. But most importantly, I reunited with many dear friends from my @steim_amsterdam days (and made new ones!). I also got to see instruments I designed in the past, which are still in great shape @antioddo @albertoboem. It's been really great #nime #nime2024 #utrecht #netherlands #digitalmusicalinstrument #design #friends #steim #uidesign #research #unipd #cscpadova #deiunipd

The audio of the feedbacking strings goes through the model while the pressure on each of the eight segments of the fretboard shifts each of the eight latent dimensions of the autoencoder. About time for a proper : I’m a musician and researcher in musical interactions, post-digital instrument design, networked music performance, and interactive machine learning. Huh, maybe I should (re)watch the monogatari series just so I could watch the new season as it airs.

I think I finished up to "second season" and a bit after that? IDK.
