@mair There's a musician on my #morrisDancing team that plays a concert flute (in addition to other people who play six hole flutes, pennywhistles, and other instruments).

Good night at the Insomaniacs Ball - we didn’t stick it out to the bitter end as I’d hoped we would, but left some time around 1am, as not only were our dancers tiring (and busking nearly everything as there’s very little Cotswold we actually know!) but the numbers were thinning (probably 2/3 of the proper Cotswold dancers left before us) as a hard core settled into grind out the more obscure dances until dawn, and most of the musicians had left too so we were being asked to play things we didn’t know and then having to scratch around for someone who did. At that point discretion seemed the better part of valour.

Definitely a fun experience, and good for my “playing along quietly with things I don’t really know” skills.

While we only stayed a couple of hours later than most ales, it felt a bit different and if your a morris dancer wishing striking distance of Long Clawson and haven’t been you should certainly consider giving it a go.

Mild disappointment that the excellent cheese board didn’t include Long Clawson cheese though. :-P

About half an hour until we leave for the Insomaniacs Ball - because what better than an all-night session of Cotswold morris when you, um, barely dance/play any Cotswold? Fingers crossed it is going to be #Epic!

Pensans Morris dancing on the threshold of the Other World.

Liminal.

In Penwith you get used to seeing people dissolving into their daemons or the other way round.

Not just for summer and not for the faint-hearted.

@RobJLow @phonner I discovered just recently that there's one difficult bit in one of our #MorrisDancing tunes I always rush (and more to the point, it is way too fast for the dancers). A nice revelation because it doesn't seem like quite as much of a difficult bit once I slow it down to a good dance tempo.

Really pleased that Powderkegs could take part in the New Mills Wassail this year. This was last weekend and was a lot of fun!

Off for Wassail round two tonight as Powderkegs lead our own in Whaley Bridge.

A line of morris dancers, dancing along a road. They wear jackets with long tatters, strips of fabric in red, orange, yellow and black, over black shirts and trousers. They wear bell pads on their legs with short tatters, and black top hats decorated with different items including ribbons, flowers and feathers. Their faces are painted in different designs in the same colours as their jackets. They carry long sticks, which rest on their right shoulders. Along the side of the road pots of people are watching. It is a bright day and sunlight beams diagonally down from the top left of the picture.Powderkegs performing a dance. Six dancers in two lines of three. They have just clashed sticks and now the two lines face in opposite directions.Members of the crowd have joined in with a dance. They are in groups of three and place their sticks into the middle of their group, forming a triangle as they dance around in a circle.New Mills' very own straw bear! This is a costume made of bundles of straw tied together and completely covering the body of the person underneath. Each limb and the torso are covered separately so the straw bear is still able to walk, with some assistance! The head is a very tall, tapered structure, meaning the bear towers above everyone else. There are lots apples tied around its waist. It is lead on a rope by its handler, a woman with short grey hair and glasses, wearing a bright red jacket. She leans towards the camera with a slight smile.

After a significant hiatus the #Binghamton Morris Men had a practice today! Went over some of the small set dances we've been doing and started working out a new one. Looks promising.

Last week we marked Halloween by going to the pub and doing big-space morris dances in a not-big space, e.g. - youtu.be/ogNkgaFLa-Y

I’m lucky to be able to take part in such silliness and fun.

Today’s morris admin chore done - dance list for next Saturday’s Ale written out… God help anyone who wants to change it now!

Always handy having a sword about the house for when you need a long straight edge, but my scribing is not what it once was.

Three sheets of flip chart paper with Red Cuthbert Ale 2025 written at the top of the first one, then the names and traditions of various dances with gaps for requests on the night, in a very approximate approximation of some sort of bastardised insular minuscule (ish).Blank flip chart paper with a steel ruler, a combat blunt replica Anglo-Saxon sword (Gilling style IIRC), a big marker pen and a propelling pencil

Unusual dance out yesterday, but we got participation prizes so I now have a medal for morris dancing.

A painting of morris dancers, sort of, from the creative mind of painter Sharon Eisley. The human guy is in Deer Creek kit (from Palo Alto, California); the bull is probably from Pipe and Bowl (Renaissance Faire team); I can't place the others, but Sharon was working from photographs from the San Francisco Dickens Fair, so they're probably from around here. I believe this is the five of wands from a not-yet-complete tarot deck.

It's called "Listen to Your Fire." I've also included the card hanging on the wall next to it. If anyone just has to have it on their wall, pop on over to her website and make the arrangements, or just look at the other cool paintings.

A photograph of a painting, which depicts five morris dancers in non-matching outfits, dancing on a bed of fiery coals, with flames floating over their heads. They're holding sticks and clashing them together. One of the dancers is a human male, another is a human woman dressed in a black leather dress. The other three are anthropomorphic but have lion's, bull's, and eagle's heads.° Listen To Your Fire
oil on wood in upcycled frame

Listen.

I can't hear you over
The scream of my opinion.
I'm burned out,
my coals spread apart.
Our passions are
Little fire demons
Dancing on the pyre.
If we listen to each other,
Understand,
We will burn brighter,
together.

Son of Morris On is a British folk rock album released in 1976 under the joint names of Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol, John Tams, Phil Pickett, Michael Gregory, Dave Mattacks, Shirley Collins, Martin Carthy, John Watcham, John Rodd, The Albion Morris Men, Ian Cutler, and the Adderbury Village Morris Men.

Like the previous Morris On (1972) and subsequent "Descendant Of" Morris On albums, it features English Morris dance tunes and songs, played with a combination of traditional instruments (concertina, melodeon, fiddle, etc.) and modern ones (electric guitar, bass, drums)...

The cover photo by Peter Vernon mirrors that of the original Morris On album with a photograph of the principal participants (left to right: Michael Gregory, Phil Pickett, Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol and John Tams) in morris-associated costumes, but with modern accessories.. - Wikipedia

One of the Binghamton Morris Men tested positive for covid the day before, so we had only five for the Hudson Valley #Garlic Festival and had to borrow one Bouwerie Boys dancer for each dance. And of our seven brand new sticks, two broke. Still, a good day ending with a nice dinner at sunset at the #Saugerties lighthouse.

Decent day of dance yesterday for the Fed AGM, though we were not on our best form. Dancing a Dilwyn with Ramshackle, one of whose founders first danced with us when she was 16-18, felt like a minor highlight.
It was also really enjoyable to discover the Rutland Arms on Friday (may have contributed to my <100%ness yesterday…) and the vegetarian thali at 5tara last night.
Once again we failed to send anyone to the actual meeting… I think that makes 4 times of the 5 we’ve gone to the AGM DoD over the last 13 years - “oops” (though again it was a case of attend meeting, have evening meal, be possible for train-goers to get home: pick two).
Slow start for me today doing some admin to sort our side music practices for the winter while others lie in before we find a slap up lunch and drive home.
