Mastodon specimens are fairly rare in Minnesota. Two of the state’s specimens, a molar found near Alexandria and a partial pelvis found near Kensington, are currently housed at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria. The museum also holds the controversial Kensington Runestone, an artifact proposed to provide evidence of pre-Columbian trans-Atlantic contact in MN.

Even longer ago:

"On Tuesday, July 8, 1986, a quiet neighborhood in Mounds View, Minnesota, was roused from its slumber when a wall of fire roared down that street. A mother and her six-year old daughter, shocked by the noise and obviously frightened, opened their door, stepped outside; and were incinerated."

This is the plaque we installed in 2015 on the corner of 7th Ave N & 3rd St. N in Minneapolis, the site of the “Bloody Friday” shootings on July 20th, 1934. Among our planned commemorative events is a ceremony where we’ll lay a wreath here in memory of workers shot that day. That will take place on July 20th, 2024 at 4 PM.

The front of Northern Pacific Railway #1213, a class Y-3, 2-8-0 consolidation built at the Schenectady Works in 1901. There are 8 people pictured with the locomotive.

The engineer of #1213, presumedly, is up on the running board and leaning against the boiler. In front of him is seated a man wearing a protective outer garment. To his left, is sitting a boy with a cap. He's in front of the smoke box door just above the front coupler. His feet are resting on what appears to be a jacket. To his left side is a man, maybe his father, he has a beat-up hat on his head and his pants are held up by braces. Next is a man without a hat sitting up on the fireman-side running board, in his lap are heavy gloves.

On the footboards are three standing men. The two on the left are a stout man with a vest and pocket watch and a taller man with his arms crossed. On the other side is a man wearing a long, dark coat and a rounded hat with a wide brim turned up.

Not only did Gov. Olson fight the Klan, corrupt businesses and monied special interests, he was also kind of a smoke show.
