By the way, using rnodeconf to set up the T-Echo was slightly easier than setting it up as a #MeshCore companion node using https://flasher.meshcore.co.uk/ and that is already a piece of cake.

I love the idea of reticulum but I'm not quite techy enough to get into it unless someone builds some easier ways in. #meshcore is actually working and I'm super impressed after having dabbled for a year in mesh and being so disappointed.

#reticulum is a network stack that can be used to build decentralized mesh networks via a wide variety of transport media such as LoRa, WLAN, TCP/IP, serial links, and packet radio. #meshcore is only a lightweight LoRa mesh with limited resources. In my opinion, this "betamax vs. VHS"-contextualization is misguided.

@MartinRost @kudra #meshcore certainly seems like a significant improvement on #meshtastic. They are only promises, time will tell. #meshcore has a “first byte collision” problem when trying to perform traceroutes, which is an annoyance that will rapidly become more common. Doesn’t affect normal packet routing thankfully.

#reticulum seems like the ultimate solution technically but it might be a betamax vs VHS situation - meshcore is easier and will prevail if it’s “good enough”.

Finally managed to set up a #meshcore node. It was surprisingly straightforward, although I haven't yet found a comprehensive guide about what to do _after_ getting the node up and running.

Apparently I'm able to directly reach a peer which is more than 2km away, which is impressive given that my node is currently just sitting in my living room.

I think you're describing a typical eureka moment after a completed change: #meshcore delivers what #meshtastic promises, perhaps more convincing conceptually, but ultimately only promises.
