#HBO #Chernobyl draws heavily on Svetlana Alexievich's #oralhistory book Voices from Chernobyl.

That's exactly why oral #history matters: it preserves how events are experienced, not just how they're later reduced to "what happened". #Testimony keeps the human truth in the record.

New essay: The Myth of WWII Saviorism - Antisemitism and National Memory in America

Before WWII, U.S. policy treated Jews as racial outsiders. After 1945, that same nation recast itself as their rescuer.

I trace how this moral inversion shaped American memory and how “saving the Jews” became a story about saving America.

screenshot of the beginning of the mentioned article. Text: Introduction: Camp memories
in Africa and beyond
Jochen Lingelbach
University of Bayreuth, Germany
Abstract
Introducing the special issue on the memorialization of camps in Africa and beyond, this text discusses key
questions of memory studies and the global history of encampment. Whatever their purpose, all camps
are meant to be exceptional, transitory and temporary. Camps are often connected to contested histories
and memorialization efforts by former inmates or others can lead to controversies and struggles over its
interpretation. Building on a range of empirical examples from Africa and beyond, dealing with camps ranging
from the most coercive to the benevolent and from the beginning of the twentieth century until today, this
special issue invites a comparative, globally entangled and actor-centred view on camp memorialization.

published #OA in Memory Studies

co-authored with Marijana Hameršak (#Zagreb )

We look into the history of a #WW2 #Yugoslav #refugee #camp in #Egypt and how it is remembered in #Croatia until today. In short: It was never forgotten, but integral but changing part of Yugoslav and regional Dalmatian history.
