#KDE Linux, the KDE team’s immutable distro is getting closer to a new Beta. Personally I like more minimalist desktop environments like #Mate but I do see the appeal of KDE and appreciate all the innovation and great apps from the project.

@alexei_1917 I prefer Gtk-based DEs over Qt-based ones. I also prefer clones of the Windows 95 desktop environment, as opposed to more modern DEs that are supposed to work well on mobile and desktop computers.
The top-three Gtk-based Windows 95 clone desktop environments are:
The Cinnamon user experience is by far the best, so many little details that just make it a joy to use. Cinnamon is what Windows 95 could have been if for the past 30 years Microsoft would have only ever made tiny, incremental improvements to what was already a 95% perfect UI/UX bringing it slowly to a 100% perfect desktop, instead of completely ruining their desktop environment every 3-5 years.
Xfce is the most customizable, so if you like the components of your DE to be modular and tailor every detail to fit your workflow, Xfce is the best. I used it for about 15 years and I still love it, even though I use Cinnamon now.
MATE is also very nice, but I can’t really think of any advantage it has over Cinnamon or Xfce at all.
I don’t like Gnome because they try to make your desktop environment into a smartphone or tablet user experience. That just doesn’t sit right with me, probably because I grew up using Windows and Mac. Gnome is very nice, very easy to use, but just it isn’t for me.
I have very strong opinions about the Gtk versus Qt debate. I favor Gtk, the reason being that it is written in C and not C++, and C is the correct choice for Linux because Linux is written in C, so software developers don’t have to worry about the C++ name mangling problem. Gtk is itself based on GLib, the GObject OOP system, and the GObject Introspection framework, which automates the process of linking a scripting language to the system libraries. This means you can write your own GUI scripts using your favorite scripting language (Python, JavaScript, Java, Clojure, Lua, Ruby, Common Lisp, Scheme, Racket, you name it). Doing this in Qt is extremely difficult, costly, and error-prone.
Moin!

A little while ago, I rescued an old #laptop from becoming #ewaste. The keyboard is a little wonky, but it is more for consuming than typing so that is ok. I am running #Ubuntu #MATE #2404, and it is solid and fast enough. #Snaps are nice because I can split tunnel them with #PIA #VPN and cannot with #Flatpacks but, if you know how, please let me know. Two apps I have been enjoying of late on this machine are #Kasts for #podcasts and #FreeTube for ad free YouTube.

Lemme ask you something.
What possible good do you think you're providing when you do shit like this?
Be better.
If you hate Gnome enough that you want to go to a Gnome-only distro's discord and brag about being able to "get rid of Gnome" (or that's how you feel about #Plasma or #Mate or #Cinnamon - whichever), just fucking go use a different Distro and leave people who like the thing alone. Fuck's sake, it's not hard, you useless pile of human excrement.
These posts have been about a linux distribution, but the Owlbear may also be working through other issues.

Turning Aging Library Desktops Into Modern Learning Tools With Linux
I was volunteering at the local public library, where I find myself frequently these days. The library has some older Dell OptiPlex All-in-One desktops that have been in service for over 10 years. They came to the library as Windows 8 machines. The computers were delivered to the library in January 2015, and they have functioned well over the past eleven years. They’re currently running Windows 10 Professional, but since that is no longer supported, this public library and countless others around the world are being forced to upgrade.
These computers have quad-core i5 CPUs with 8 GB RAM. They don’t meet Windows 11’s specifications, so they’re rendered obsolete by the operating system’s choice. The computers have 240 GB hard disks. But if you’re willing to think differently, you can save your library and other libraries around the world thousands of dollars and provide a teachable moment for your patrons by installing Linux on them. Recently, I wrote about using immutable Linux distributions for just this purpose, but in this case, I chose to use Linux Mint MATE.
I created a USB drive with Linux Mint MATE and brought it with me to the library. I took one of these older Optiplex all-in-ones that the library director had supplied for my use and testing, and installed Linux Mint MATE on it very quickly. Then I followed Seth Kenlon’s excellent article on creating a special library user that would reset itself each time the computer is restarted, so that no patron files would be left on the machine.
I used a text editor to edit the fstab file on the computer to add the following line to the file:
tmpfs /home/libraryguest tmpfs rw,nosuid,nodev,size=2G 0 0Then I mounted the drive using the following command:
$ sudo mount /home/libraryguestThen I created a user for that newly created temporary drive:
$ sudo useradd --home-dir /home/libraryguest libraryguestI created a password for that library patron user and rebooted.
$ sudo passwd libraryguestThen I rebooted the system and the new ‘libraryguest’ login prompt was there on the display.
Picture by Don Watkins CC-by-SA 4.0MMy new patron login has a simple password ‘library’ that’s easy to remember. I opened a terminal and created three files using the touch command.
$ touch one
$ touch two
$ touch threeI opened up LibreOffice Writer and saved the word processing file to the ‘Documents’ folder.
I rebooted the computer and logged in to the ‘libraryguest’ account again, and all the files I had created were gone. Public libraries were created so people of all incomes and backgrounds could access books, information, and learning resources. Learning about Linux and open source software is one of those learning resources. I installed many other open-source programs on the computer as the administrative user, which are available to the library patron user. Some of those were Stellarium, Audacity and Gimp. Linux Mint MATE provides easy access to over 60,000 free software packages and 7,800 games through its Software Manager.
Free and open source software has always been about more than code — it’s about expanding access to knowledge. By installing Linux Mint MATE on a decade‑old library computer, we didn’t just extend the life of a single machine. We demonstrated that learning doesn’t have to be gated behind expensive upgrades or proprietary systems. Public libraries exist to level the playing field, and free software aligns perfectly with that mission. It invites curiosity, encourages experimentation, and gives every patron — regardless of income — the chance to explore powerful tools used by professionals worldwide.
In an era when technology is often disposable and locked down, open source offers a different path: one rooted in sharing, transparency, and community. Reviving these older OptiPlex machines shows that libraries can remain places where people discover not just information, but also the freedom to shape their own digital environment. That’s a lesson worth passing on.
Special thanks to Seth Kenlon, who helped me to find the solution
