Budapest, 1989. March 15th is one of the main national days in Hungary, commemorating the country's revolution, and war of independence, against the Hapbsburgs in 1848. It has always been celebrated as such over the past 170-odd years, no matter what the political system. Here, in the dying days of the Communist era, crowds gather at the statue of Sándor Petofi, one of the heroes of 1848, to celebrate the day.

Today we celebrated the Hungarian National Day of March 15th at the Hungarian Garden in Wellington. This commemorates the day in 1848 when the Hungarian rose up against the hated Hapsburgs. "Talpra, Magyar, hí a haza"/"On your feet now, Hungary calls you!" says the mighty poem that is embedded in the heart of every Hungarian. A timeless call for freedom, no matter the age.
