The big AI companies have argued all along that their LLMs do not store copyrighted works in memory, but rather, just “learn” from their training data like a human mind.

Peeps at Stanford and Yale have uncovered evidence that AI models are copying copyrighted data, not just “learning” from it. Four prominent LLMs, GPT-4.1, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 3, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet were deemed to be very capable at reproducing “substantial amounts of copyrighted text can be extracted from open-weight models”, aka whole books.
