Yesterday evening at #LIFF the movie LifeHack was on the menu. About a heist to steal $25m in crypto from an internet millionaire. Four teenagers multitasking furiously online while chatting away, feeling invincible online.
I felt like a real boomer, seeing the speed with which they jumped between apps, typing, talking and gaming.
Current time Wargames movie. 😉
Fun movie, especially for the nerd crowd here.
Vanmiddag de tweede film gezien: The Last Viking, met Mads Mikkelsen.

Last film I’ll see at #LIFF is “Chlorophyll”. Adrift and dissatisfied, a young woman abandons her studies for a job picking oranges, the only employee of the eccentric youngest son who runs the orchard. In his company she feels safe to reveal her unusually close relationship to nature and literally begins to blossom.
A bit more restrained and slowly-paced than I like, but still mesmerising. Very similar in some ways to “Else”, but for some reason I liked it more ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Film #Leeds #review
“Flow”: In a world not entirely like ours, a cat falls in with a ragtag band of animals to survive an apocalyptic flood. They must work together to find refuge in a world that is now by equal turns beautiful and terrifying. A gorgeous piece of animation - despite its stylisation - and told entirely wordlessly. Each creature oozes personality. It has minor flaws: it relies on the odd contrivance, and has the odd niggling plot hole, but it’s just so damn charming ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Film #Leeds #review #LIFF
Another film, Thibault Emin’s “Else”. An hook-up at a party becomes something else when a plague spreads that makes people literally melt into their surroundings, the country locks down, and they decide to ride it out together. As the walls literally close in on them, they have to make hard decisions.
This #Film wants to talk about a lot: body horror, intimacy, and individuality, and there’s no denying the director’s vision and visuals, but the pace is glacial. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Leeds #review #LIFF
Final film of the day, “Tim Travers and the Time-Traveller’s Paradox”. Utterly bonkers, so of course I liked it. A slightly sociopathic genius wants to find out what happens if you go back one minute in time and kill yourself. Chaos, that’s what. Made on an even smaller shoestring that was helped by a lot of the scenes only featuring one actor, but also some surprisingly well-known faces. Don’t worry, watch it, it’ll make … _more_ … sense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Leeds #Film #review #LIFF
Next, “U Are The Universe”. Ukrainian film made on a shoestring and miraculously finished whilst the war is ongoing and various cast and crew kept having to go and fight. A gruff loner who is essentially a long-haul trucker in space hauls nuclear waste between Earth and Callisto, with only a dad-joke-cracking robot for company. Then something very bad happens. Clever, touching and funny. Very nearly a 5, but doesn’t quite stick the landing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Leeds #Film #review #LIFF
Next, I had to miss “The A-Frame”, so it’s straight into “Jupiter”. Not really SF, so it’s a bit of an odd inclusion. But it’s still a very well-made and slightly unsettling. A young girl and her neurodiverse brother are regularly taken by their parents to the retreat of a spiritual group who believe we are all secretly energy beings who came from Jupiter. But this latest visit seems to have a greater urgency. Livened up by clever use of flashbacks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Leeds #Film #review #LIFF
It’s the #Leeds International #Film Festival, and I’ve managed to get in off my rare marathon film watching days. This year it’s “Sci-Fi Day”. Going to throw in some mini #review s in this thread.
First up is “A Samurai in Time”: A Samurai on the losing side at the end of the Edo period is thrown forward in time onto the set of a jidaigeki TV show (period drama). Fun and touching fish-out-of-water tale with an obvious affection for the subject and a surprisingly tense climax. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
