A line chart showing the relative poverty rate (after housing costs) across different government administrations. The x-axis shows the length of time the administration was in office for, starting at year 1 of their election. Four administrations are shown: Wilson/Heath/Callaghan (starting in 1964), Thatcher/Major (starting in 1979), Blair/Brown (starting in 1997/98) and Cameron/May/Johnson/Truss/Sunak (starting in 2010/11). Wilson/Heath/Callaghan had the lowest starting poverty rate at 13%, which increased to 17% in their ninth year in government but then fell again to 13% in their 15th year. Thatcher/Major had the longest administration (18 years) and there was a steady increase in poverty from their first year at 14% to their 18th year at 25%. Blair/Brown saw a decrease in poverty from 24% in year 1 of their administration to 20% in their eighth year; it then increased to 22% for the rest of their administration (ending after 13 years). The Cameron/May/Johnson/Truss/Sunak period showed very little change, with the poverty rate at 21% in the latest year's data.

@josiah.mortimer agree it’s a function of both a toxic media and poor messaging but, when #jrf analysis shows almost everyone except pensioners will be worse off and the wealthiest will suffer less than most, one can’t blame people for focusing on what they see as the negatives…
