I updated the #HouseRules for my #P1e #Ustalav campaign to add Cure Deadly Wounds and Inflict Deadly Wounds to the witch spell list as level 6 spells.

Witch class normally doesn't have Breath of Life spell (Cure Deadly Wounds is a renamed Breath of Life spell) on their spell list but they do have all the normal Cure and Inflict spells, and Raise Dead. Adding Cure/Inflict Deadly so they have the full set.
So they're getting a small boost.

The audacity must be on sale today. 😤🚫

Let’s be clear: Just because you are invited over does not mean you have full clearance.
1. Do not open my fridge like you pay the electric bill.
2. Do not walk on my rug with your outside shoes.
3. And if you bring a stranger without asking? You’re both staying outside.

We are bringing back basic home training. Who agrees?

#GaryGygax himself might have objected to the phrase "house rules." As far as he was concerned, the creator of #ADnD didn't have #houserules. He only had new rules he hadn't told the rest of us about yet.

#Fediverse, and especially #Mastodon #admins: Either add #HouseRules that side with specific groups because you have principles and stand by them – or just leave it. Don't set up surveys to figure out whether you should have such house rules. Your house rules are understood as a statement of your stance.

The self-proclaimed majority never cares, but always questions the lived experiences of others, and is reliably outspoken on why "such things" aren't even worth mentioning at all, on your platform. I've yet to see any survey post that doesn't get flooded with "replies" that demonstrate nothing but ignorance, born out of privilege.

Even worse: I've seen admins periodically posting surveys on such matters. It's a clear sign that what are needs and rights of some are merely tokens in a debate, to them. It deeply disappoints and frustrates those who thought they had an #ally, and are now learning that the respective admins are among those who don't mind seeing questioned, in public, the essence of what and how they are.

RPGaDAY2025 – Day 30 – Experience – XP in the OSR

What’s #RPGaDAY2025 ? See the details here.

Day 30 – Experience

I’ve recently started running an OSR West Marches game using the Basic Fantasy rules. It’s going pretty well so far, but I think I’m having issues with awarding Experience Points (XP)

Basic Fantasy is mostly a retro-clone of B/X. Here’s how the current (4th) edition explains how to reward XP.

Experience points are given for monsters defeated, and for other challenges as the GM sees fit.

Every monster has an XP value, and some extra points are given if players use their class abilities.

Here’s the problem I’m having. Since I’m running a West Marches game, and I don’t have the same players each session, XP gains are very slow. I’ve run five sessions and none of my players are anywhere close to getting to level two.

The issue for me, as GM, is that since the players are staying at 1st level, it’s limiting what adventures I can run. I can’t give them any higher-level adversaries without risking a TPK. Which can be fun once, but I can’t have it happening every session.

So I’ve been looking at some of the other methods of awarding XP that other OSR games have tries, and worked out which might be best for my game.

XP Methods

Treasure: A pretty common one. I don’t care for it. It forces a GM to have to plan treasure hoards a little too carefully to avoid

Individual Feats: Giving XP every time a player does something cool. I think this would work well in a ongoing campaign with a set roster of players. I’m running a West Marches, and many of the players are entirely new to me, so this seems a little unfair. I don’t want to be perceived as favoring or disfavoring anyone in particular.

Goalposts: Set XP reward for accomplishing certain things in a setting. This is the one I’ll probably go with. It seems to make the most sense in a West Marches.

Here’s my initial ideas for general goalposts. I’ll also have specific goalposts for each scenario. The point totals are per player, and aren’t set in stone. They’re just my first estimates for good values.

  • Exploring a new place – 200 XP
  • Saving an innocent life – 100 XP
  • Discovering a new bit of lore – 150 XP

Nova Regra: Descanso Longo

DescansoTempoCurto8 horas (enquanto dorme)¹Longo48h Sem usar nenhuma habilidade*Tabela 1. Proposta do DM O Dragão Verde

Self-Sufficiency
The expenses and lifestyles described here assume that you are spending your time between Adventures in town, availing yourself of whatever Services you can afford—paying for food and shelter, paying townspeople to sharpen your sword and repair your armor, and so on. Some Characters, though, might prefer to spend their time away from civilization, sustaining themselves in the wild by hunting, Foraging, and repairing their own gear.

Maintaining this kind of lifestyle doesn’t require you to spend any coin, but it is time-‐consuming. If you spend your time between Adventures Practicing a Profession, you can eke out the equivalent of a poor lifestyle. Proficiency in the Survival skill lets you live at the equivalent of a comfortable lifestyle.

PHB p.159

BackgroundStarting LifestyleAcolyteModestCharlatanComfortableCriminalPoorEntertainerModestFolk HeroModestGuild ArtisanComfortableHermitPoorNobleWealthyOutlanderPoorSageModestSailorModestSoldierModestUrchinModestTabela 3. Backgrounds x Lifestyles

RPGaDAY2025 - Day 26 - Nemesis - How to Punish a PC

Using the goddess Nemesis to enforce alignment

polyhedralnonsense.com/2025/08

RPGaDAY2025 – Day 26 – Nemesis – How to Punish a PC

What’s #RPGaDAY2025 ? See the details here.

Day 26 – Nemesis

Some RPGs have a fairly strict morality system, usually called alignment. It’s a code of ethics that players are supposed to follow. What happens if they don’t?

I’m going to use Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retribution, as a mechanic for enforcing alignments.

In this scheme, Nemesis is not just a goddess, but a permanent moral fixture of the universe. If a hero steps off his or her moral path, Nemesis will take notice and come to punish the transgressor.

All PCs start out with a Nemesis level of zero. If they do anything counter to their alignment, the GM can add a one to their Nemesis level. The levels are as follows:

  1. Nemesis is asleep
  2. Nemesis has awoken
  3. Nemesis has noticed you
  4. Nemesis has begun her journey
  5. Nemesis is coming
  6. Nemesis is near
  7. Nemesis has arrived

As the number increases, there will be various signs and omens around the PC, warning them of the cost of their misdeeds. To build tension, GMs may want keep the PC’s current Nemesis level secret from them.

If the number reaches six, Nemesis will arrive to punish the PC.

If a player makes a genuine attempt to atone for their actions, the GM may lower the Nemesis level.

The Arrival of Nemesis

All natural processes will come to a halt. Birds will cease singing, the wind will not blow, and rivers and streams will stop flowing. All will go quiet. Nemesis will appear, usually in the guise of a human woman wearing a blindfold, though this may vary depending on the culture of the area.

The nature of the punishment is up to the GM. One could make it some kind of poetic justice (like Narcissus), or to keep it simple, use the following:

Withering of Nemesis

  • Reduce maximum hit points by half
  • Reduce STR, DEX, COM by 1d4 points
  • Reduce level by one

Nemesis cannot be attacked or defeated. She is an inherent property of the universe, like gravity. After her punishment is imposed, she will disappear.

A Nemesis Campaign

Alternately, you could have a campaign where the players start out with a high Nemesis level, for evil deeds in their past. The point of the game is they have to go out and do good deeds to redeem themselves and avoid the judgement of Nemesis.

RPGaDAY2025 – Day 24 – Reveal – Secret Identities

What’s #RPGaDAY2025 ? See the details here.

Day 24 – Reveal

In a lot of pulp or superhero worlds, characters have secret identities. Batman is Bruce Wayne, Spiderman is Peter Parker, etc. They’re in constant danger of having their true identity revealed.

How can we model this in a RPG?

I’m going to steal an idea from Zorro: The Roleplaying Game from West End games (which, sadly, is out of print). It’s a somewhat modified version, designed to be generic enough to work with any game.

Suspicion Points

A character with a secret identity will have Suspicion Points. They’ll start off with 1.

Gaining Suspicion

Whenever a character does something that might lead others to suspect them, they gain one Suspicion Point.

Example: The masked crimefighting hero known as the Revenger is attending a charity ball as his alter ego, millionaire playboy Rex Fontaine. Without warning, a ninja assassin hiding in the ballroom ceiling fires a poison blow dart at Mayor Thompson. The Revenger, with his honed reflexes, knocks the Mayor out of the path of the deadly projectile. Detective "Blackjack" O'Toole, begins to get curious about the wealthy Fontaine's apparently incredible reflexes. The Revenger now has 2 Suspicion points.

The GM may want to reward a player who gains suspicion for a heroic act by awarding them Hero Points, or whatever the game’s equivalent of Hero Points are.

Testing Suspicion

Whenever suspicion is raised, the GM rolls a d6. If the result is equal to or less than the current Suspicion Points, the character is Revealed.

Example: The GM rolls a 4. Rex Fontaine pretends to be tipsy from the champagne, and claims to have bumped into the Mayor by accident. Detective O'Toole is satisfied, for now…

Revealed

If the Testing Suspicion roll fails or the character gets six Suspicion Points, the character is Revealed. Some possible scenarios:

  • Taken in for questioning by the authorities.
  • Captured by an Archenemy
  • Harassed by the media

This doesn’t mean they’ve immediately been unmasked. They may still have a chance to save their double life. That process would most likely be a whole adventure.

Reducing Suspicion

To lower the Suspicion, there are a few options for a player:

  • Use a double so that both you and your alter ego are seen at the same place
  • In public, act in a fashion unlike your alter ego – cowardly, weak, etc.
  • Find a patsy, and claim they’re your alter ego.
  • Produce evidence, (real or fake) that proves your innocence.

If any one of these work, lower the Suspicion Points by one.

Example: Rex Fontaine's faithful manservant Quanto, dressed in the iconic black cloak of the Revenger, flees the burning toy factory, in full view of the police. Seeing this, Rex Fontaine pretends to faint in the street, being caught in the arms of Detective O'Toole. The Revenger loses one Suspicion point.

Suspicion Fades (optional rule)

If a character completes two adventures without doing anything to cause a Testing Suspicion roll, they will automatically lose a Suspicion Point.

RPGaDAY2025 – Day 13 – Darkness

What’s #RPGaDAY2025 ? See the details here.

Day 13 – Darkness

A lot of RPGs, mostly fantasy, involve players entering dark places. How do different games handle characters being plunged into darkness? A surprising number of games don’t talk about it at all, except for some simple modifiers to combat.

Here’s some interesting methods and ideas different RPGs have used for dealing with darkness. Feel free to add other games in comments.

Shadowdark

In darkness, there’s a disadvantage on all sight related roles. Random encounter checks happen every round in darkness. The darkness literally makes everything more dangerous.

Neoclassical Geek Revival

All areas have a darkness score between 0 and 10. The number is used as penalty to attack, detection, and perception checks.

Veins of the Earth

There’s fairly detailed discussions of what darkness is like and how to handle it. There are rules for how a party lost in darkness can try to make stat checks to make their way, and possibly find a new light source.

Savage Worlds

Penalties of -2/-4/-6 for three different lighting levels: Dim, Dark, Pitch Darkness.

GURPS

In darkness, players can make Hearing rolls to find foes during combat.
