The buildings constructed from #cannabis
Francesca Perry, 18 June 2023
Excerpt: "In search of #sustainable materials, architects are turning to an unusual source: #hemp.
"Surrounded by verdant fields, Flat House, which sits on a farm in Cambridgeshire, the UK, looks like a typical barn conversion. But inside, the look and feel of the building immediately make you realise this is something quite different. 'The walls remind me of hay bale dens we used to make as kids,' says Flat House's owner Gemma Barron. 'It has the most lovely acoustic quality. And last year we had the heating off for 24 hours in mid-winter and it stayed warm.'
"What makes this bright, airy and comfortable home unusual is the material used to build it: hemp. While we may be more familiar with the cannabis plant's association with the psychoactive substance cannabis, and its use in health supplements and textiles, hemp is rapidly becoming a sought-after sustainable construction material.
"The fast-growing plant is a renewable resource, with carbon-capturing properties. When used in building, it typically takes the form of 'hempcrete' (also known as lime hemp concrete), a sturdy material made by mixing #HempHurd â the woody core of the plant â with a binder made from water and lime. Hempcrete has a high thermal mass, making it an ideal insulation material which improves the energy efficiency of buildings and reduces greenhouse gas emissions over time. It also continues to absorb carbon over its lifespan.
"Sustainable materials are in high demand as the construction industry seeks to decarbonise. Buildings and construction are responsible for approximately 37% of energy and process-related global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This is due to the industry's heavy reliance on fossil fuels, including carbon-intensive materials such as concrete, steel and glass, as well as the greenhouse gases emitted in heating and cooling our buildings."

Nine buildings constructed using #hemp show the biomaterial's potential
Nat Barker | 6 January 2023
Excerpt: "Hemp is becoming an increasingly popular material among architects seeking to reduce the carbon impact of their projects. Here is a roundup of nine buildings constructed using the versatile cannabis crop.
Mounting evidence suggests that the construction industry must adopt bio-based alternatives to common carbon-intensive building materials, such as concrete, to play its part in reducing emissions and limiting global temperature rises.
One such alternative gaining increasing attention is hemp, the fast-growing cousin of the marijuana plant that is already widely used as a biofuel and textile.
Cambridge University researcher Darshil Shah previously told Dezeen that hemp can capture atmospheric carbon twice as effectively as trees.
In buildings, it is often used in the form of hempcrete â a composite of hemp fibres and lime that is durable, highly insulating and mould-resistant.
Read on for nine buildings constructed using hemp..."

#RhodeIsland #HempIndustry faces uncertainty amid federal crackdown on #THC products
by Christopher Shea
Thu, November 13, 2025 at 5:50 AM EST
"Mike Simpson is one of Rhode Islandâs biggest cheerleaders for hemp cultivation and the plantâs derivative products â remedies, he believes, that may help where pharmaceutical medicines cannot.
"Itâs that very reason Simpson helped co-found Rhode Islandâs only outdoor hemp farm, where he says many of the businessâ products ship all across the country.
"But Lovewell Farmsâ may cease operations now that Congress has approved reopening the federal government under legislation that would effectively ban hemp products containing more than 0.4 milligrams of THC. If approved by President Donald Trump, the ban will go into effect in a year.
" 'This might be the final straw,' Simpson said in an interview Wednesday. 'I may have to shut my whole company down.'
"Simpson doesnât sell intoxicating products, but said crops grown at his Hopkinton farm can contain up to 1 milligram of THC in it, as is allowed under existing Rhode Island hemp regulations.
" 'I have 700 to 800 pounds of flower that I grew this year that under that law would not be legal,' he said."

âThe #HempDoctorâ warns of devastating impact in #NorthCarolina from new #THCBan
Shaquira Speaks
Wed, November 12, 2025
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) â " 'We have people that range from age four all the way to 95 years old coming in for the products. And they donât all come in for the products that make them feel euphoric,' says The Hemp Doctor owner Robert Shade.
"Heâs been running the Huntersville business since 2018, providing products like gummies, seltzers, and even oils for consumers looking to relax or reduce pain. They contain tiny amounts of THC, the same active chemical in marijuana.
"That will come to an end when the spending resolution to reopen the government becomes law. It contains language that would make all products containing THCA and Delta-8 THC illegal â again.
"Thatâs 99% of the products in Shadeâs stores.
"In October, 39 state attorneys general called on Congress to clarify the definition of hemp â arguing THC products are intoxicating, like marijuana or alcohol.
"The Trump Administration signed the 2018 Farm Bill, legalizing the sale of hemp-derived THC products if they contained less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. A product containing THC in quantities beyond that threshold would be considered marijuana.
" 'It would decimate the industry. Youâre talking about the loss of a $70 billion industry, over 300,000 jobs across the country. And itâs a surprise to all of us. I mean, we saw things coming, but we didnât know it was going to be so detrimental to us,' Shade said.
"The new measure would give businesses one year to close down shop, unless Congress revisits the hemp issue.
" 'We have 365 days to continue the fight, which is really asking every single person out there who uses these products to contact their senators, their state representatives, and tell them to change the amendment. Donât let this go through,' Shade said.
"Shade urges people to call even when the bill passes, telling them to ask their representatives what theyâll do to make it right."

Fresh off defeating state #THC Ban #Texas #HempIndustry faces wipeout under federal deal to end #shutdown
Marijke Friedman
Thu, November 13, 2025
"As part of the spending deal to end the government shutdown, federal lawmakers approved a provision cracking down on hemp products containing THC, restoring a ban Texas Republicans sought to impose earlier this year.
The funding package, passed by the U.S. House and signed into law by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, includes language banning the sale of hemp-derived products with more than 0.4 milligrams of tetrahydrocannabinol, or #THC, the psychoactive element in #marijuana. The measure would criminalize almost all consumable hemp products nationwide.
The provision was added at the last minute to a bill that provides yearlong funding for the Department of Agriculture. It closes what proponents of the ban call a âloopholeâ from the 2018 farm bill that allowed the hemp industry to take off without federal regulations. Unless Congress reverses course, the ban is set to start a year after the legislation goes into effect. Opponents of the provision warn it will effectively shut down Texasâ $8 billion hemp industry and the thousands of jobs associated with the sale of consumable THC products.
In the lead-up to the vote that sent the funding deal to President Donald Trumpâs desk, Republicans in Texasâ congressional delegation were divided over the hemp ban. Sen. John Cornyn supported the provision, voting against an amendment that proposed to strip the hemp language, while Sen. Ted Cruz was one of two Republicans who voted for the amendment, arguing that hemp and marijuana should be regulated at the state level rather than through a âone-size-fits-all federal standard.â
The House did not take a one-off vote on the hemp ban, but some Texas Republicans weighed in against the idea, despite voting for the overall funding package. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Houston, said he believes a ban should be decided by individual states."

Federal spending bill threatens #Minnesotaâs #hemp-derived #THC industry
Provision would cap THC content at 0.4mg per container, effectively banning current products
By Selah Jacoway
Published: Nov. 13, 2025 at 7:54 AM EST|
FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - "A provision in the federal governmentâs spending package would restrict Minnesotaâs hemp-derived THC industry by capping THC content at 0.4mg per container.
The U.S. Senate voted 76-24 on Monday to advance the provision, which now goes to the House for a vote as early as this week. The measure was championed by Sen. #MitchMcConnell and opposed by Sen. Rand Paul.
The provision would reverse what McConnell called a âloopholeâ in the 2018 Farm Bill that inadvertently legalized hemp-derived THC products. The 2018 law removed hemp from the controlled-substance list and defined hemp as any #cannabis plant or product with 0.3% or less THC.
Industry impact
Minnesotaâs hemp-derived THC industry generates $140 million in retail sales. Current Minnesota law, passed in 2022, permits 5mg THC drinks and edibles for adults over 21.
The federal cap would effectively ban current products, which contain at least 2mg of THC even at the lowest doses.
Business concerns
If the provision passes, businesses selling hemp-derived THC products would face the same restrictions as cannabis businesses, including:
- Higher taxes under federal tax code Section 280E
- Limited access to banking and credit card services
- Cash-only operations"

#Cannabidiol (#CBD): a killer for #inflammatory rheumatoid #arthritis synovial fibroblasts
Published: 01 September 2020
by Torsten Lowin, et al.
Abstract:
"Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid from cannabis sativa that has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in several inflammatory conditions including arthritis. However, CBD binds to several receptors and enzymes and, therefore, its mode of action remains elusive. In this study, we show that CBD increases intracellular calcium levels, reduces cell viability and IL-6/IL-8/MMP-3 production of rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASF). These effects were pronounced under inflammatory conditions by activating transient receptor potential ankyrin (TRPA1), and by opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Changes in intracellular calcium and cell viability were determined by using the fluorescent dyes Cal-520/PoPo3 together with cell titer blue and the luminescent dye RealTime-glo. Cell-based impedance measurements were conducted with the XCELLigence system and TRPA1 protein was detected by flow cytometry. Cytokine production was evaluated by ELISA. CBD reduced cell viability, proliferation, and IL-6/IL-8 production of RASF. Moreover, CBD increased intracellular calcium and uptake of the cationic viability dye PoPo3 in RASF, which was enhanced by pre-treatment with TNF. Concomitant incubation of CBD with the TRPA1 antagonist A967079 but not the TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine reduced the effects of CBD on calcium and PoPo3 uptake. In addition, an inhibitor of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, cyclosporin A, also blocked the effects of CBD on cell viability and IL-8 production. PoPo3 uptake was inhibited by the voltage-dependent anion-selective channel inhibitor DIDS and Decynium-22, an inhibitor for all organic cation transporter isoforms. CBD increases intracellular calcium levels, reduces cell viability, and IL-6/IL-8/MMP-3 production of RASF by activating TRPA1 and mitochondrial targets. This effect was enhanced by pre-treatment with TNF suggesting that CBD preferentially targets activated, pro-inflammatory RASF. Thus, CBD possesses anti-arthritic activity and might ameliorate arthritis via targeting synovial fibroblasts under inflammatory conditions."
