If You Had Six Months to Live Where Would Your Priorities Be?

Where would your priorities be if you had six months to live?

I came across this question recently, and it stuck with me. If you had six months to live, what would you do with your life? Where would your priorities be if you found out today? It sounds simple, but it cuts straight through the noise.

What immediate changes would you make if you knew you had six months left? Would it be the new sports car? A designer bag. Botox or cosmetic surgery. A new apartment or house. New clothes. A new version of yourself built around status or appearance.

Pause for a moment and think about it honestly. If you knew today, would those things matter? Your diet probably would not. Your job would not. The person who cut you off in traffic would not. The coffee order at Starbucks would not. Oat milk, almond milk, extra sugar, no sugar, none of it would matter.

All the small things that nag at you every day would disappear. Who bought what? Who said what. Who earns more? Who looks better? That noise would vanish fast.

Your focus would go straight to your family. Your partner. Your spouse. Your children. Everything else would fade into the background. You would not care about your neighbour’s new Mercedes or the Hermes bag someone bought with a bonus.

I am sure Steve Jobs would have traded every dollar he had for more time. In the end, you cannot take any of it with you. If it came down to your last six months of health, your attention would lock onto survival and connection. You would depend on friends and family more than you ever have. You would spend time with them. You would tick off what matters. You would live the way you were meant to live.

Now let’s pretend.

Imagine you were told you had six months to live. You make the changes. You live differently. Then, in the fifth month, you are told you are not going to die.

What changes would you keep?

What would you implement in your life today if this were a second chance? Be honest. Would it be family? Career. Health. Fitness. Mental health. Peace of mind. More time with your spouse or partner. More time with your kids.

There is no age attached to this question. You could be in your twenties or your forties. You could be seventy or ninety. The question stays the same.

Make a list. Write it down.

What would you change if you had six months to live? If you are obese, would you lose the weight? If your mental health is suffering because of a person or situation, how would you handle it? If you smoke, drink, overspend, chase validation or numb yourself with habits you already know are hurting you, what would you do differently? Or would you change nothing because you are already content with where you are?

Most people would change something. Most would redirect their energy. They would talk to people instead of staring at their phones. They would pass on knowledge. They would write down their life so they are not lost. They would finally handle the will they have avoided for years. They would take the trip they had always delayed. They might give up daily habits that drain money and time to save for something meaningful.

There is a lot to be thankful for. There is also a lot you already know you want to change.

You do not need a diagnosis to start. You do not need a phone call or an email telling you tomorrow is the end. Ask yourself the question now and act on the answer today.

😱 Oh no, someone was frightened by a gathering of anti-modern medicine zealots in Minnesota! Who knew that a group of folks blaming Satan for their sniffles could be so terrifying? 🙄 Perhaps next time, they'll be less scared by some old-school hocus pocus and more worried about their own choice to attend. 🤡

Been supporting a friend with cancer over the last few months.. too late to do much for him by the time it was found. I've been around several family and friends who have died and all have talked about what they wanted in terms of treatment and funeral. This friend has been less clear and his health has deteriorated rapidly in the last few days. He will die very soon, has no relatives and none of his friends have any idea what he wanted. As I drove home tonight the air ambulance landed on the football field to collect someone involved in a serious traffic accident...you never know when illness or accident might turn your world upside down. Please talk about this sort of stuff with family or friends or even just write a few things down. #EndOfLife #Death #HealthChoices #Funeral #Memorial #burial #cremation
