International Survey on The Effects of Fragrances on Quality of Life

The time has finally come, the results of the international survey on the effect of fragrances on quality of life have been published in their final version. Thank you to those of you that filled in the survey and to those involved in putting the survey together.

Previous cross-sectional surveys showed that between 20 to 35% of the adult population reported health concerns when encountering fragrances. The present international survey with 3152 self-reported fragrance sensitive persons addresses the situation in more detail. It gathered reported symptoms, underlying diseases, strategies to cope with fragrance sensitivity, and the impact on participation in social life and on quality of life.

The survey concluded by saying:The data from this survey show how much the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to fragrances restricts the lives of people with fragrance sensitivity. They also show how much the extent of the problem is underestimated by outsiders and that it is time to optimise health protection in this field. A responsible use of fragrances would not only help vulnerable individuals, but also the general population and the environment.
