Una cosa che mi manda in bestia: quando in film o serie tv in inglese, arrivati al momento di conoscere la famiglia di lei, lui (nel doppiaggio italiano) se ne esce con perle tipo "stasera conoscerò i suoi parenti".
Ma 🤬🤬🤬! E' una delle prime cose che si imparano quando s'inizia a studiare la lingua di Shakespeare: 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 sono i genitori, non i parenti (𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴).
法语里表示国家的单词是 pays，比如荷兰就叫 Les Pays-Bas，bas 是低的意思，那个低地国家就是荷兰了。
这个 pays 看起来一样，其实和英语的 pay 并不同源。
法语的 pays 来自拉丁语的 pagus，就是一个地方的意思，pagus 还衍生出另一个我们熟悉的词，paysan -> peasant，农民，那块地上的人。
英语的 pay 源自古法语的 paier，settle 的意思，欠了债，付钱把账勾销。
但为了记单词，把国家记成交钱也没毛病。毕竟在某些国家，不存在 what your country can do for you，只是一味让你交钱而已。
