Approved for destruction - Australia a global deforestation hotspot

"More than 57,000 hectares of threatened species habitat was approved for destruction by the Australian government in 2025 – the most in 15 years, according to analysis by the Australian Conservation Foundation."

“A lot of people don’t know that Australia is a global deforestation hotspot … every year, we lose more forest than the loss from the entire palm oil industry in Indonesia...Of the threatened species land clearing, 98% occurred in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales."

Animal friendly infrastructure - Road ecology

"Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they’re practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. , the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill. "

The overhaul of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act)

"Proposed timeframe leaves 12 days to scrutinise most significant changes to national environmental protection regime since 1999."

"Murray Watt relayed the message in private talks with mining industry leaders in Perth this week after giving a speech promising faster project approvals under a planned overhaul of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act)."

"The Greens environment spokesperson, Sarah Hanson-Young, said a set of laws backed by industry and the Coalition spelt danger for nature and the climate. Let’s cut through the spin: if the mining industry and the Liberals back this package, it says everything. It’s a deal for corporate profits, not a deal for nature or our climate."

Biodiversity “standing in the way” of growth - The same headline everywhere...

"Wage war on nature to build new homes: that’s Labour’s offer, but it’s a con trick ", George Monbiot

"The government’s new planning bill is tearing down environmental protections to benefit developers... But if you listen only to “leading CEOs”, you ensure the country becomes hospitable to capital but inhospitable to wildlife and people. As the war on nature proceeds, ministers sound ever more like Donald Trump...Irreplaceble ecosystems will be sold for cash."

"The Wilderness Society
has been successful in federal court proceedings it launched in March that sought to compel the minister to make recovery plans for species including the greater glider and the ghost bat."

"In a court settlement, reached Friday, the government agreed mandatory recovery plans for four threatened species – the greater glider, the ghost bat, the lungfish and the sandhill dunnart – had not been made and successive ministers had exceeded the timeframe in which the plans were required to be created and put in force."

“Today is a win for threatened wildlife across Australia. After decades of neglect by government after government, we took to the courts to fight for Australia’s pride and joy – its diverse and world-important environment,” the Wilderness Society biodiversity policy and campaign manager, Sam Szoke-Burke, said. The resolution of this case provides much-needed certainty for Australia’s iconic plants and animals, some of whom have been waiting for over a decade for a legally required recovery roadmap to give them a better chance at surviving extinction.”

“For decades, successive governments have failed to follow their own laws and deliver these vital recovery plans. The court has now compelled the environment minister to do his job and make the required plans."

Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world
It also has the highest loss of mammal species anywhere in the world

"Almost three-quarters of Australian households own a pet...In the 12 months to March, owners spent an estimated $21.3bn on their pets, with food representing almost half of that spend."

What’s in the 2025-26 federal budget for nature?
"Australia's direct government spending on on-ground biodiversity programs was around $474 million in 2025-26, but this figure is forecast to drop significantly in subsequent years, making it a temporary election-year increase. While this is the specific government investment, experts argue it's far below the necessary amount, with figures like $1.69 billion annually needed to address threatened species recovery and around $2 billion annually needed for ecosystem restoration and management."
>>
biodiversitycouncil.org.au/new

"Australia needs to spend around $15.6 billion per year for 30 years to prevent the extinction of 99 priority species, a figure derived from a 2025 study, but current federal budget allocations fall significantly short of this amount. Studies show Australia currently spends far less, estimated at approximately $122 million per year, and environmental groups consider this insufficient to combat the extinction crisis."

Man's best friend - First eradicate the Neanderthals, then biodiversity

Humans and their dogs drove our evolutionary cousins Neanderthals to extinction
"Early dogs, bred from wolves, played a critical role in the modern human’s takeover of Europe 40,000 years ago when we vanquished the Neanderthal locals. The Neanderthals, who had lived there for more than 200,000 years. However, within a few thousand years of our arrival, they disappeared...Humans and hunting dogs were, and still are, a deadly combination." >>

Monetising the great koala national park

"The government estimates the park’s value as a tourism destination will generate an extra $163m for the state’s economy over two decades.
