Elephants are dying at unprecedented rate in Sri Lanka.
470 elephants deaths in 2023, over half killed by humans.

Elephant's habitat destroyed by increased agricultural practices.

Landfill sites are built too close to elephant habitat. Therefore elephants are scavenging in landfill and dying.

Written over 10 years ago, this opening paragraph of Tom Friedman's “The Earth Is Full” is even more relevant now, and we're still digging in deeper!

It leaves me wondering how much longer it's going to continue before governments stop being manipulated by the "Captains of Industry" for their economic gain. The warning bells are ever-loudening ...

"You really do have to wonder whether a few years from now we’ll look back at the first decade of the 21st century — when food prices spiked, energy prices soared, world population surged, tornados plowed through cities, floods and droughts set records, populations were displaced and governments were threatened by the confluence of it all — and ask ourselves: What were we thinking? How did we not panic when the evidence was so obvious that we’d crossed some growth/climate/natural resource/population redlines all at once?"

We have a complicated relationship with mushrooms but, as scientists point out, they are a wonder weapon in our fight to help the environment so we need to make our peace with them

Standard passenger cars are less likely to kill or seriously injure pedestrians and cyclists. Just one reason why the takeover of our roads by SUVs and UTEs is so fucked. Then there are the environmental issues and toll on the roads. We need to add a huge tax on owning oversized cars (with tradies being the exception)

Two-thirds of car journeys in Australian cities are short, and could be done by bike in 15 minutes or less. Why aren't more people cycling?
