I needed a holder for a Bosch Smart System ebike charger, so I fired up the CAD system and made one.
I generally love my ebike, but I have to say that it is poor at communicating its status to the rider.
Mine is equipped with the "iWoc Trio" handlebar mounted control, which at least gives you three separate buttons for control (usually increase e-assist, decrease e-assist and on/off, but overloaded with some secondary functions too) but for status info/feedback there is precisely one (1) colour LED plus a vibration motor for tactile feedback.
You can only feel the vibration motor when you have a finger on the buttons (so it's no use for alerting you to an uncommanded change), and the LED isn't bright enough to be visible in direct sunlight so I've often had to shade it with my hand in order to check it. Most of the time the LED uses 4 different colours to give you a vague indication of current battery level, but immediately after pressing either the increase or decrease buttons it will switch mode to using the same 4 colours to instead tell you the e-assist level, then go back to battery level after a few seconds. So in order to check your e-assist level you have to press one of the buttons that changes it.
The whole thing is just excessively and needlessly overloaded, and should instead have at least two LEDS (brighter ones) or, better yet, two LED or LCD bar-graph displays.
The intended solution to this poor UI/UX is either using an ANT+ cycle computer (and Mahle will happily sell you their own) or the Mahle app running on your phone, but I shouldn't need to add even more electronics to my bike for basic functionality.
While I'm bike posting, a question for anyone with an ebike using the Mahle (formerly ebikemotion) X35 system. Does yours ever spontaneously turn off e-assist uncommanded?
Mine has been doing this occasionally, and I often fail to notice until I've been riding for a while with less e-assist than I intended. It caught me out this morning, turning e-assist off just under 4 minutes in, and when I got to the uphill part of my ride I thought I was changing from Level 2 of 3 to Level 3, but was instead changing from off to Level 1. No wonder I struggled to get up that hill more than normal! I only realised what was going on when I was almost at the top.
