The Cliffs, Dover, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Dover

#Cliffs #Dover #England #WhiteCliffsofDover #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a picturesque coastal scene featuring towering white cliffs beside turquoise waters. These are likely the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, known for their dramatic presence and historical significance as a maritime landmark in England. The cliffs' rugged textures contrast with the smooth surface of the sea below.

In the foreground, there's a stretch of beach or rocky shoreline where individuals can be seen enjoying leisurely activities near the water. Several large boulders are scattered across the calm waters at the bottom left corner, adding to the naturalistic aesthetic.

On top of the cliffs, structures like railings and buildings suggest human habitation and use, possibly for observation or as part of a military installation given their strategic positioning along coastlines historically significant during conflicts. The sky is partly cloudy with hints of greenish-yellow hues that blend into a pale blue gradient in the distance.

The overall coloration has an aged appearance reminiscent of old photographs, likely from late 19th to early 20th century judging by its style and quality which suggest it could be a postcard or print.

A railway track traverses from the foreground into an underpass carved through one side of the cliff, leading to tunnels that disappear within the mountain's depth. On either side of this tunnel entrance are buildings with pitched roofs suggesting a historical period likely in the late 19th or early 20th century. To the right, a dirt path winds along the shoreline and into the countryside beyond, bordered by fences and vegetation. In the background, gentle hills stretch towards another prominent structure resembling an observation tower atop one of them. The sky is clear with few clouds, suggesting fair weather conditions at the time this postcard was produced during Shakespeare's Cliff in Dover, England between approximately 1890 to 1900.

In the foreground is a rocky jetty or pier extending into calm waters where individuals are seen wading and swimming. loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a vintage scene at Dover Admiralty Pier in England, dating approximately between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A prominent feature is a large ramp leading from the land down to the water's edge where several ships are moored or docked, with one ship emitting black smoke indicating it may be powered by coal steam engines common during that era.

The pier itself extends into calm waters under an overcast sky with hints of blue peeking through. Alongside the paved walkway at the top level is a railing and street lamps, suggesting pedestrian pathways for visitors or workers. Several individuals dressed in period-appropriate attire are scattered across the scene: some walking along the promenade, others standing near lampposts.

The image captures an industrial port bustling with maritime activity against the backdrop of British seaside architecture. The overall atmosphere is one of historical significance and a glimpse into life during that time at Dover's Admiralty Pier, likely serving as a strategic entry point for naval vessels or merchant ships navigating through English waters.

Our visit to the #IsleOfWight involved a good bit of walking, which I like a lot. The terrain is quite even, unlike the craggy areas that I’m more familiar with around these parts.

Here you can see the #Chalk #Cliffs at the coast. I suppose the most famous example of those is #Dover in #Kent but that’s not very far from here.
